Socialist labor activist Delores Huerta, who, in 1966, co-created the United Farm Workers (UFW) union with Cesar Chavez, wants California schools to ensure they don’t graduate neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
Students, the 93-year-old told California Democrats on Saturday at the state party’s 2023 endorsing convention in Sacramento, need to learn about their “responsibilities” as a citizen.
“I don’t think that any public school in America should ever graduate a person who is going to be a neo-Nazi or a white supremacist,” she said, according to the Washington Examiner. “If we can actually put civic, citizen responsibilities back into our schools because we don’t have that right now. I mean, it is really alarming how many people who come out of our schools that don’t vote.”
Huerta, however, may not be the person you want to be defining “responsibilities” for impressionable children.

The longtime activist is an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America with close ties to “Rules for Radicals” author Saul Alinsky, according to Influence Watch. And the UFW is associated with Black Lives Matter.
Speaking in Sacramento, Huerta “criticized ‘right-wing fascism’ that she said is encouraging the banning of books across the country,” the Examiner reports.
And Huerta has the president’s ear.
Not only is Cesar Chavez’s granddaughter, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Joe Biden’s campaign manager, Huerta’s union publicly backed Biden’s 2024 campaign last September.
“Rodriguez accepted the UFW’s endorsement last month as part of the Biden campaign’s prebuttal to the second Republican primary debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California,” according to the Examiner. “The group will be critical in organizing Spanish-speaking voters in battleground states, such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Texas, before next year’s elections.”
“The UFW’s organizing has always been about standing up against injustice and fighting for working people,” Rodriguez said at the time. “Those same values are at stake in this election, as MAGA Republican candidates for president would rather give handouts to the ultra-rich and powerful at the expense of hard-working Americans.”
Huerta is also the founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation (DHF), which, in 2010, received $100,000 from the Clinton Foundation, according to Influence Watch. In 2019, the State of California tossed her foundation $2 million to partner with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center in Oakland, California, to promote “civic engagement.”

“Engagement” has long been part of DHF’s agenda.
According to its website, the organization is “on a mission to inspire and organize communities to build volunteer organizations empowered to pursue social justice.”
“Our social justice grassroots organizing work is focused on Civic Engagement, Education Equity, Health and Safety, and LGBTQIA+ Equality,” it states.
DHF “has sued school districts in California over alleged mistreatment of minority students or representation. DHF trains community organizers and engages in campaigns to increase taxes on California businesses,” Influence Watch reports. “In May of 2018, the DHF joined a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to the Census questionnaire.”
Huertes, Influence Watch notes, “has traveled the country influencing campaigns and elections in a personal capacity.”
