‘I’m from Chicago bro’: Man armed with shotgun soon regrets trying to rob store in free state of Florida

A “would-be” robber walked into a convenience store in the Florida Panhandle toting a shotgun earlier this month and wasted little time in announcing that he was from Chicago.

Unfortunately for the suspect, he was in the free state of Florida, and the store employee watched him arm himself before entering the store and quickly moved to a back room to retrieve his own personal gun, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

The dramatic encounter was captured on surveillance camera and the sheriff’s office shared the footage on Facebook.

The Facebook video was titled, “Not a good time for a robbery…,” and the caption concluded with this zinger: “You’re not in Chicago anymore; you’re under arrest.”

“The employee returned to the counter holding his own gun toward the befuddled attempted robber. He then fumbles for words, resorting to meaningless babble about being from Chicago. Words seem to fail you when your felony attempt is thwarted by lawful and righteous force. Thankfully, he decides that it is not the time for a robbery, and he slowly exits the store,” the caption reads.

As for the babble, the suspect said after seeing the armed clerk: “I don’t mean no harm, I’m just not from around here.”

When the clerk asked him what he had in his hand, he replied, “I got a big a** m************ gun, but I’m not from around here is what I’m saying. I’m from Chicago bro.”

” I see your sh*t though,” he added, an apparent acknowledgment of the weapon the clerk was holding. It’s not clear what the employee said, but the thwarted crook saunters out of the store ever so carefully, looking over his shoulder the entire time.

Rakim Stephen Tate, 32, was located and arrested on Sept. 15, in neighboring Santa Rosa County, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

“He was charged with openly carrying a prohibited weapon and attempted robbery with a firearm,” the ECSO Facebook post said. “The Benelli shotgun used in this robbery attempt was also recovered.”
