James Clyburn’s campaign funneled six figures in cash to family members in 2022 cycle, filings show

According to Federal Election Commission filings, South Carolina Democratic Rep James Clyburn blessed two of his family members with six figures worth of campaign dollars during the 2022 election cycle.

Tens of thousands of dollars went to a company tied to his son-in-law, and his grandson was the beneficiary of nearly $100,000, Fox News Digital (FND) reports.

During the last election cycle, Clyburn paid $57,500 to 49 Magnolia Blossom LLC for rent expenses. The registered agent of the limited liability company is Walter A. Reed., the husband of Clyburn’s daughter, Jennifer Clyburn Reed, a former teacher.

Walter A.C. Reed is Clyburn’s grandson. The lawmaker paid him $94,000 for “campaign management fees,” according to his filings.

“While it’s legal for federal politicians to pay family members from their campaigns, ethics experts have generally disapproved of the practice,” reports FND. “Despite this, both political parties have taken advantage of the perk.”

In 2020, Clyburn gained national attention with his endorsement of Joe Biden for President ahead of South Carolina’s primary. Many believe it was the high-ranking Democrat’s push that set Biden on the path to White House victory.

“I want the public to know that I am voting for Joe Biden,” he told the press during his announcement. “South Carolinians should be voting for Joe Biden, and here’s why.”

The longtime lawmaker said at the time, “We don’t need to make this country great again. This country is great. That’s not what our challenge is.”

“Our challenge is making the greatness of this country accessible and affordable for all. …” he stated. “Nobody that I’ve ever worked with is more committed to that motto, that pledge that I have to my constituents, than Joe Biden.”

After Biden won the election, he nominated in 2021 Clyburn’s daughter, Clyburn Reed, as federal co-chair of the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission, which is tasked with relieving economic hardship in the southeastern United States, according to FND.

And, as American Wire News recently reported, Clyburn’s support of President Biden has not waned.

In mid-January, he told CBS host Robert Costa that he believes Biden will run again in 2024, and he’s “all-in” for a second term.

“I’m all-in for President Biden. “I think he’s demonstrated, in these two years … that he is deserving of reelection,” Clyburn said. “And I do believe he will be reelected irrespective of who the Republicans, they put up.”

The 82-year-old Congressman said he’s spoken with the President and urged him to campaign against the Republican House majority.

“I’ve told him on many occasions that I believe that he ought to announce for reelection and get the playbook laid down by Harry Truman back in 1948 and use that as their mantra upon which to run for reelection,” he said.

Asked if he thought Biden will face primary challengers, Clyburn replied, “I don’t think he will, and I don’t think he should.”

On Twitter, few are surprised to learn that Clyburn enriched his family members with campaign cash.

“No surprises there!” exclaimed one user.

“OK….WHERE IN HELL IS THE ETHICS INVESTIGATION?” another demanded to know.

“No problem here,” stated a third, “he pleaded Democrat.”
