Kevin McCarthy appears busted in stone-cold lie after audio recommending Trump resign is released

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, of all people, has, it would appear, exposed GOP House leader Kevin McCarthy as a liar.

Late Thursday she released stunning audio footage from a Jan. 10th, 2021 conversation between McCarthy and then-House Republican Conference chair Liz Cheney.

During the conversation, McCarthy broached the idea of telling then-President Donald Trump that he should resign given that Democrats were seeking to impeach him again.

It happened exactly as Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns of The New York Times had described it in an adapted book excerpt published Thursday.

The conversation began with Cheney asking, “I guess there’s a question. When we’re talking about the 25th Amendment resolution, and you asked if, you know, what happens if it gets there after he’s gone, is there any chance, are you hearing, that he might resign? Is there any reason to think that might happen?”

McCarthy replied by admitting that he’d been “seriously thinking” about broaching the idea with the then-President.

“I’ve had some few discussions. My gut tells me no. I’m seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight. I haven’t talked to him in a couple of days. From what I know of him, I mean, you guys all know him too, do you think he’d ever back away? But what I think I’m going to do is I’m going to call him. This is what I think,” he said.

He continued by seemingly wondering whether Democrats would drop their push to impeach the then-President if he’d resign beforehand.

“We know it’ll pass the House. I think there’s a chance it’ll pass the Senate even when he’s gone. And I think there’s a lot of different ramifications for that. Now, I haven’t had a discussion with the Dems, that if he did resign, would that happen?” he said.

McCarthy concluded his remarks by again broaching the idea of telling Trump to resign.

“Now, this is one personal fear I have. I do not want to get into any conversation about Pence pardoning. Again, the only discussion I would have with him is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign. I mean, that would be my take. But I don’t think he would take it. But I don’t know.” he said.

This audio footage ostensibly poses a problem for McCarthy because it flat-out contradicts what he and his spokesperson had said before and after the publication of Martin and Burns’ report.

“McCarthy never said he’d call Trump to say he should resign,” his spokesperson told Martin and Burns just prior to the piece’s publication.

After publication, McCarthy issued a blistering statement on Twitter denying everything.

“The New York Times’ reporting on me is totally false and wrong. It comes as no surprise that the corporate media is obsessed with doing everything it can to further a liberal agenda. This promotional book tour is no different. If the reporters were interested in truth why would they ask for comment after the book was printed?” he said.

To be clear, Martin and Burns’ book, “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future,” isn’t slated for release til early May. The Times’ story published Thursday was simply an adapted excerpt/teaser.

“The past year and a half have proven that our country was better off when President Trump was in the White House and rather than address the real issues facing Americans, the corporate media is more concerned with profiting from manufactured political intrigue from politically-motivated sources,” McCarthy continued.

“Our country has suffered enough under failed one-party Democrat rule and no amount of media ignorance and bias will stop Americans from delivering a clear message this fall that it is time for change,” he added.

Obviously, Martin and Burns’ claims aren’t “manufactured political intrigue” — they’re factual. But the question now is whether Republicans even care. The evidence thus far suggests they really don’t.

The evidence includes endless tweets complaining about McCarthy’s lie — endless tweets coming from far-left partisans who already hated him to begin with.

As for McCarthy, while his relationship with Trump grew slightly strained in the wake of the Jan. 6th riot, these days it appears to be doing just fine.
