LAPD identifies UCLA student’s ‘killer’ as a career criminal who remains armed and dangerous

The suspect accused of stabbing UCLA student Brianna Kupfer to death has been identified as Shawn Laval Smith, a 31-year-old homeless career criminal.

As of Wednesday, he remained loose on the streets, with the Los Angeles Police Department warning that he should be “considered armed and dangerous” if spotted.

Records reviewed by the Daily Mail show that Smith’s criminal record spans both coasts and includes charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, carrying a concealed weapon, simple assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen goods and misdemeanor larceny from Charlotte, North Carolina alone.

These charges were reportedly all sustained in 2016. As of 2021, both the mayor and district attorney of Charlotte are Democrats, with the DA appearing to be especially left-wing, as demonstrated by the preponderance of left-wing buzzwords like “equity” and “inclusion” on his official city website.

Records also show that between 2016 and 2019, Smith sustained charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, failure to appear in court and firing a weapon into an occupied vehicle in Charleston, South Carolina. The city’s mayor is also a Democrat, but the political alignment of the DA remains unknown.

According to the Daily Mail, the charge involving him firing a weapon into an unoccupied vehicle was issued in late 2019. He was released on a $50,000 bond at the time, and as of Jan. 2022, the case reportedly remains “pending.”

Smith also sustained a series of unidentified charges in Cherokee, North Carolina in 2015, 2016 and 2018. And more recently, he was arrested in October on a misdemeanor charge in Covina, a city within the bounds of Los Angeles County.

According to a law enforcement source who spoke with Fox News, his most recent charges include “shoplifting” and “assaulting a police officer,” the latter charge of which was reportedly sustained in San Mateo, a city close to San Francisco.

It’s not clear why, after committing so many crimes, Smith was still on the streets on Jan. 13th, the day he allegedly murdered Kupfer as she was working alone in a high-end furniture store in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District.

What’s known is that Los Angeles County is among one of the most “progressive” districts in the country, with District Attorney George Gascón being a Soros-backed “criminal justice reform” advocate who’s been so light on crime that even the district’s notoriously left-wing residents are seeking his recall.

Gascón is also under fire in a separate case in which he refused to prosecute a 26-year-“transgender woman” as an adult for a sexual assault of a 10-year-old that the now-convicted criminal had committed two weeks before turning 18 in 2014.

Thanks to this leniency, the “transgender woman” will now either be housed in a juvenile facility (despite being 26) or given probation. According to the New York Post, Gascón went light on the “transgender woman” despite the victim in the case having submitted a statement last month begging for a tougher a sentence.

“I just wanted to forget I’m part of any of this. And I’m constantly reminded of my past because of this case. I live in fear most of the time, and although it’s something that I tried to tell myself isn’t my fault, I could never truly believe it. I feel that I’m to blame somehow, when I know deep down that isn’t the case,” the victim reportedly said.

“I chose not to come into court because I couldn’t stand the thought of having to see my attackers’ face again. And I hope, after all of this comes to an end my attacker gets the punishment he deserves for attacking a child with no problem and I can finally get on with my life.”

Gascón is one of dozens of Democrat prosecutors facing heat for going light on crime. The results of these prosecutors’ policies has been disastrous.

Over in New York City, a homeless man who’d been released without bail after threatening another man with a screwdriver recently went on to murder a 19-year-old Burger King cashier in cold blood.

In the same city, a homeless man who assaulted three people in the past few weeks and was let loose every single time went on to assault a fourth person.

And in the same city, another homeless man recently pushed an Asian woman into a subway track as a subway train was arriving. She died on the scene.

Speaking on Fox News earlier this week, Kupner’s father pinned the blame for her death on the sort of prosecutors and politicians, including Gascón, who keep pushing for and/or implementing the weakening of the criminal justice system.

“Crime is truly spiking, and we have a lot of criminals on the streets that shouldn’t be out. We have a lot of politicians that somehow forgot about people and think the key to getting elected is to support the lowest rung of our society and to give them rights and somehow that’s the answer to getting votes,” he said.
