Kamala Harris could be forced to pay for her own security detail once and for all if her GOP political opponent, Steve Hilton, wins the gubernatorial race.
It was revealed on Tuesday that the failed presidential candidate was using the California Highway Patrol to escort her through her book tour.
The news sparked outrage, and it wasn’t the first time.
In September 2025, at least a dozen LAPD officers were reassigned from crime-suppression work to Harris’s security detail after President Trump terminated her Secret Service protection.
The move enraged the board of directors of the LA Police Protective League.
“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire, with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts,” the board released in a statement at the time.
It seems much hasn’t changed, except that most of the public outrage now comes from Hilton, who vows things will be different if he’s elected governor.
“The Kamala Harris book tour is obviously part of her presidential campaign. Her donors – if she’s got any – should be paying for her security, not Californians who already pay the highest taxes in the country for the worst results,” Hilton blasted.
“This is yet another example of the California Democrats siphoning off our money into their bottomless money pit of waste, fraud, of corruption, and abuse. As governor, I will cancel her security detail.
“Our brave CHP officers have enough on their plate dealing with the Democrats’ crime wave without having to traipse around after a failed and rejected machine politician who can’t bear to be out of the limelight.”
The Kamala Harris security detail scandal is outrageous. Her book tour is obviously the start of her presidential campaign. Her donors – if she has any – should fund it, not taxpayers.
Why should our brave CHP officers traipse around after this failed and rejected politician? pic.twitter.com/0J7qukBFhm

Hilton posted his message on social media, where it’s getting a lot of positive feedback on X:
This it total BS. It discredits the CHP when the politicians force them into being their lapdogs.

👏👏👏❤️ YES! This “security” job is soo beneath our brave and wonderful CHP officers, a few of them had to have drawn “short straws”, and this IS NOT in their job description.

It’s definitely a controversial issue.
Taxpayer money shouldn’t fund a political campaign, especially not for a candidate who’s lost support.— John Lee (@aiktp_com) March 5, 2026
I agree. Perhaps consider getting a Bill created that any official with S.S detail obtaining any proceeds not related to government duties should be required to reimburse all monies earned during such events/times.

Steve you are inheriting a State full of fraud, top to bottom and then some!

A daunting task, indeed.
