An elderly Florida mail carrier has been arrested for animal cruelty after collecting cats along the route she’s had since 1997!

Police in Martin County reportedly found around 80 cats and 12 dogs living in squalor at the residence of Gail Giustino, 77. Sheriff John Budensiek described it as a severe hoarding case and unintentional abuse, as Giustino believed she was helping the cats she was taking.

Responding to a theft call, Budensiek said police learned about Giustino’s situation while responding to a call about a stolen cat.

He went on, somewhat confusingly, to say that “She didn’t steal somebody’s pet… she was likely collecting feral cats.”

Giustino was issued up to 65 citations throughout the years from animal control and got assistance installing better ventilation for the animals 10 years ago, Budensiek said.

Fast forward to today, Budensiek indicated Giustino was not cooperative when animal control showed up for a follow-up.

“I think you can smell what we’re smelling out here now,” he told the press.

“Extreme stench; this house is not ventilated,” he said before clarifying that firefighters added ventilation during the rescue.

“Conditions are horrific… “we’re talking about in some places, a foot of animal feces in that house.”

Her uniform gave her access no stranger would ever have. She could approach homes, learn family routines, and take pets without immediately raising suspicion. Eighty cats means she exploited that public trust over and over.

According to several reports, some of the animals have been reunited with their homes. Hopefully, Giustino gets the help she needs and the remaining cats and dogs find their forever homes too.
