Hugh Hewitt: Texas holds key to fulfill Trump’s second term agenda

Fox News contributor and podcast host Hugh Hewitt sees a path forward to saving President Trump’s agenda – and that path is through Texas.

Hewitt made his case days after the Texas primary election, where Texas Sen. John Cornyn held off Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the Senate seat. Outlier Congressman Wesely Hunt, however, garnered more than 13% of the vote, requiring a run-off between Cornyn and Paxton on May 26.

Hewitt is squarely in Cornyn’s camp and touted his attributes as a “stalwart conservative, a former Texas State Supreme Court justice and a strong supporter of President Donald Trump,” in an op-ed for Fox News.

Hewitt argued that if President Trump were to endorse Cornyn before May 26, he could put an end to the “sideshow that threatens” a Republican Senate majority.

Hewitt doesn’t believe that Paxton has the chops to win against the Democratic nominee James Talarico and cited the former AG’s impeachment over reported “wrongdoing” in 2023.

Paxton was acquitted, but Hewitt believes that he will “get rolled” by Talarico, while Cornyn will be much more formidable.

More from Hewitt:

The Senate GOP enjoys a 53-47 advantage right now. While it is hard to see a path for Democrats to get to 51, it’s not impossible. It becomes much more likely, in fact, if Paxton wins the run-off and loses the general. Much. More. Likely.

Hewitt went on to list what it would mean if Dems held a majority under Trump. Endless impeachment trials, an advantage to recapture the White House in 2028, and putting the Supreme Court at risk were among them.

Hewitt is banking on “smart” Texans who’ve thus far rejected massive Democrat and media attempts to flip the state blue, and ended his op-ed by urging Trump to give Cornyn his endorsement:

Texans shouldn’t bench a long-time winner for an injured and injury-prone JV player. President Trump can assure that they won’t. The president played it smart by letting Texas Republicans pick their leader in the clubhouse. Now is the time for President Trump to seal his party’s majority in the Senate in 2027 and 2028 with a ringing endorsement of Senator John Cornyn.

Not everyone sees it that way. Hewitt received quite a bit of pushback on X:

Meanwhile, Paxton has already vowed to keep running, even if Cornyn scores Trump’s coveted endorsement:
