100 Dems refuse to condemn socialism after troubling warning from Republican Cuban-American Rep

This week, House Republicans brought forth a resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism” and declaring that the House “opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States of America.”

In response, big-government-loving Democrats predictably cried foul, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries leading the charge.

“They’re bringing to the floor of the House of Representatives today a resolution on socialism, to condemn some dictators that we all condemn,” he said.

“But understand, the goal of this phony, fake, and fraudulent resolution is just to provide cover for extreme MAGA Republicans to try to undermine an agenda that is designed to lift up the health, safety, and well-being of the American people,” he added.

Listen:

The premise of his remarks was that Republicans are aiming to cut Social Security and Medicare, both of which are technically socialist programs. Indeed, that’s exactly what Rep. Maxine Waters has accused Republicans of trying to do.

“This resolution is instead as divisive as it is insulting to the American public. It is trying to suggest that Social Security, Medicare and even fire departments are anti-American. None of this is surprising to me. Nor is this blatant attempt by Republicans to try and scare Americans,” she said.

But Republicans say they’re just trying to condemn socialism. And for good reason, according to Rep. Maria Salazar, the Cuban-American Republican who introduced the resolution.

Speaking on the House floor this week, she said she introduced the resolution “because young people in America are being brainwashed by the news media and academia into believing that socialism is an economic model for the greater good of all Americans.”

“The problem is that they’re falling for it. They’re believing it. And here is the proof: Almost 40 percent of gen z and millennials think the Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx, the father of Marxism, is a better defense of freedom and equality than the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson, one of the creators of the American experiment, the American exceptionality, and the document which gave birth to the most prosperous and resilient democracy in the history of the world,” she added.

Listen:

To drive home the point of why this newfound embrace of socialism is bad, Salazar pointed to her constituents, many of whom are Cuban exiles.

“I represent District Number 27 in the city of Miami … a bastion of hundreds of thousands of Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who have fled, who have escaped from the despicable horrors that you cannot imagine produced by that ideology,” she said.

“Socialists are in the business of power, and it only takes one generation to believe their false promises and lose our freedom. It is a lie that socialism will solve your problems, economic or social. … We cannot let this evil ideology take hold in this country. We are in the United States, the stronghold of freedom. That is why we must pass this resolution,” she added.

But Democrats apparently disagree. The irony is that as recently as two years ago, Jeffries promised he’d never let the socialist wing of the Democrat Party become too powerful.

“There will never be a moment where I bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism,” he said in 2021, according to The New York Times.

Yet two years later, he can’t simply condemn socialism?

Why not? Perhaps because “socialism’s a moving target,” as Rep. Thomas Massie explained in his own remarks:

“We are inching closer toward socialism. And I think it’s important to have a vote on do we want to be socialist? What does that mean, though. To me it means size and scope of government,” he said.

“And we have those on the other side of the aisle who embrace socialism. They would embrace it at 50 percent [of GDP] spending, 80 percent spending. I’m not even sure they think of it in terms of numbers. Just whatever we can spend it on,” he added.

He referenced the Democrat habit of spending, spending, spending, even when the nation clearly can’t afford it and is already deep in debt.

President Joe Biden in particular has repeatedly made it clear that he evidently believes money grows on trees, as he continues to push for more spending bills.

And this, of course, is probably the real reason Democrats refuse to condemn socialism:  Because like every socialist in history, they love to spend the people’s money recklessly and with abandon.

In the end, 100 Democrats did not take a stand against socialism.
