The Oakland homeowner kept the loaded gun on her nightstand. When the criminals reportedly kicked in her door at about 2 am on July 26, she fetched it and slid it under the covers waiting for her chance. They allegedly barged into her bedroom demanding money, valuables, and her cell phone. They got lead instead after searching the home for stuff to steal. She fired one round at the intruders.
The thieves returned fire, allegedly shooting off 17 to 20 rounds before grabbing what they could including jewelry and hastily retreating and fleeing. It was a miracle the woman survived. She was not injured which indicates the robbers were terrible shots and probably amateurs.
The woman hasn’t been named but her daughter, who didn’t want her face shown, spoke with KTVU, stating, “It’s absolutely unbelievable what she was able to do. It’s amazing. She is a superwoman. We’re all just lauding her and just amazed at her wherewithal.”
A neighbor named Calvin Walker told the media outlet in an interview, “She had the presence of mind to reach into her nightstand and get a weapon. And she had it under her covers, and when she saw an opening, she fired a shot.”
“We went over afterwards and we saw gunshots all in the walls,” Walker stated.
Dave Lederer, another neighbor, declared, “This woman is a hero. She kept her wits about her.”
“It’s a miracle that she’s alive after the number of shots that were fired in her home,” Oakland City Councilmember Treva Reid commented.
The woman’s daughter warned the criminal element in Oakland, “I believe that this is a message also for the criminals, that people in Oakland, we’re tired of the lawlessness. People are standing up. People are fighting back.”
Lynn Baranco, a neighbor agreed, noting, “They’re really… they’re playing with their lives because all these people out here are armed.”

Oakland has seen a massive rise in violence, which has the local NAACP chapter speaking out. The civil rights organization has publicly criticized the “Defund the Police” movement that derived from the “Summer of Love” by way of the Black Lives Matter movement, according to WPDE.
In a letter to city leaders, the Oakland NAACP said that the movement to “Defund the Police” was plagued by ineffective leadership and a district attorney who showed leniency toward hardened criminals in the city.

“Unfortunately, progressive policies and failed leadership have chased away or delayed significant blue collar job development in the city, the Port of Oakland, and the former Army Base,” the Oakland NAACP wrote concerning crime in Oakland. “There is nothing compassionate or progressive about allowing criminal behavior to fester and rob Oakland residents of their basic rights to public safety. It is not racist or unkind to want to be safe from crime.”
