President Biden declared the “soul of this nation” was at stake in 2020 while painting himself as the one option who could defeat Donald Trump and unite the country. As farfetched as that may sound, it seems the 81-year-old president still believes he’s the nation’s savior when it comes to the former president.
At a Boston fundraiser on Tuesday, Biden said he’s “not sure” that he’d be running for a second term if the former president wasn’t in the race: “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running.”
CNN’s Jake Tapper called that “a stunning admission” as he rolled out CNN political director David Chalian, who pointed to polling to support the idea that a Trump candidacy is a “motivating factor” for Biden.
Chalian said Biden “tends to reveal his inner-most thoughts” when behind closed doors, before adding, “What we’re seeing here is a real, clearly defined rationale for Biden pursuing reelection despite his current political standing, which is not that great in the polls, obviously, the conversation about his age, and concern among Democrats if he is the best candidate to put forward.”
“What Joe Biden is making clear with these comments, he clearly thinks — because he said, also, “Democrats cannot let Trump win,” as a part of his comments — he thinks he is the single best Democrat to be able to defeat Donald Trump, because he did so once,” he continued. “We’ll see if it plays out this way.”
In noting the possibility that Trump is not the ultimate Republican nominee, Chalian asked: “Does that mean President Biden’s going to reconsider the reelection effort if that is the key rationale for his running?”
“Is this the kind of admission a candidate should be making?” Tapper inquired.
“It clearly will provide Donald Trump an opportunity here to talk about Joe Biden being more focused on him than anything else,” Chalian said. “But I think if Joe Biden’s critical mission this time is starting to piece back his coalition of voters, some of which he has seen a diminishing support — reminding those voters of the contrast with Donald Trump, and that Donald Trump is the target here, could help rally the troops, if you will.”
Despite being exceptionally divisive as president, Biden appears to be planning to run under a Unity 2.0 banner — while this may prove just how stupid Democrats believe voters to be, the American electorate continues to give the party plenty of reason to think this way.
