New York City Mayor Eric Adams has dropped out of Gotham’s mayoral race, a move that comes with just over a month to go until the election, a contest that could seal the fate of the nation’s largest city and fuel left-wing radicalism nationwide.
Hizzoner’s abandonment of his reelection bid has sparked hope that opposition to Democrat Zohran Mamdani will consolidate behind one candidate in a late push to prevent voters from handing the “communist lunatic” the key to the city.
The incumbent announced that he was bowing to those who have urged him to get out in a video posted to X on Sunday, a farewell message that began with Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way,” as the outgoing mayor listed his accomplishments while sitting next to a picture of his mother.

“This campaign was for the underserved, the marginalized, the abandoned and betrayed by government,” he said. “Since then, it has been my honor to be your mayor, and I’m proud to say that we took that victory four years ago and turned it into action, making this city better for those who have been failed by government.”
“Whoever follows me at City Hall must continue the work we started: lowering the cost of living, investing in quality of life, and staying laser-focused on reducing crime and disorder through investments in policing, mental health, substance abuse care, homelessness services, and community-based initiatives,” Adams added.
While he didn’t mention any names, the outgoing mayor warned of the rising tide of political extremism, one that has lifted Mamdani’s boat as the Ugandan-born Muslim has tapped into the hatred of President Donald J. Trump and America itself as a part of his appeal, a powerful allure to those already seduced by the siren song of socialism.
“Our children are being radicalized to hate our city and our country. Political anger is turning into political violence. Too often, insidious forces use local government to advance divisive agendas with little regard for how it hurts every day New Yorkers,” he said.
Adams’ departure has already boosted hope that disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo will benefit from a late surge, vaulting the tarnished one-time COVID hero into the lead, saving the city from the ruin that Mamdani will bring.
But polling has shown that even with Adams out, the charismatic young upstart would still be running away with the race.

Without Adams, the race is down to three candidates: Mamdani, Cuomo, and local legend Curtis Sliwa, who is running as a Republican, a tough sell in the deep blue city, which has shifted heavily to the left over the last decade.
“It’s not just about the polling. You know, the mayor was – is the incumbent mayor, so he is a potent force in the campaign; if he is not actively campaigning, that changes the entire dynamic of the race,” Cuomo said. “There’s now more attention on just me than just Mr. Mamdani, it is a two-person race… Now we can juxtapose the two philosophies, and people can see those facts.”
“Curtis Sliwa is the only candidate who can defeat Mamdani. Our team, our resources, and our funding are unmatched. Most importantly, we have the best solutions to help working people afford to stay in New York City and feel safe,” said the Guardian Angels founder’s campaign spokesperson, Daniel Kurzyna.
“It’s a race between us and the failed politics that we’ve seen, whether it’s Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams,” Mamdani told ABC7 Eyewitness News after Adams dropped out. “It’s a politics where Donald Trump and billionaire donors are determining the actions of failed executives. We’re going to show that they can’t dictate the outcome of this race.”
“There were months where Andrew Cuomo told everyone he could find that he wanted me to be his primary opponent, and he got that, and we beat him by 13 points,” he said. “And I’m just as confident as I was at the beginning of this general election that we’re going to win this race, and we’re going to do it by speaking to New Yorkers across the five boroughs… You’re feeling the affordability crisis in the most expensive city in the United States of America. We’re the only campaign with a plan to deliver that affordability.”
Branded as a “communist lunatic” by Trump, Mamdani has landed endorsements of the nation’s top two socialists in Congress, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as well as former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Look, as far as I’m concerned, he’s the Democratic nominee and he should be supported,” Harris told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow last week.
Anti-Mamdani forces are now hoping that enough voters will hold their noses over Cuomo’s scandal-drenched past to prevent the socialist worm from devouring the Big Apple.
