Alleged assassin Luigi Mangione throws hissy fit in court, crying ‘double jeopardy’

Alleged killer Luigi Mangione threw a hissy fit in court on Friday after he heard some bad news regarding his future, or the lack thereof.

Mangione was in a state court in Manhattan as per the case against him for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson when the judge set a state trial date of June 8.

This upset Mangione because it put stress on his legal team, which also has to deal with a federal trial that starts in October.

“It’s the same trial twice. One plus one equals two. This is double jeopardy by any common sense!” he yelled like a whiny little child while he was escorted from the courtroom, according to the New York Post.

Karen Agnifilo, one of his attorneys, issued a similar whine to the press while outside the courtroom shortly thereafter:

“All I will say is double jeopardy is meant to protect people, and they’re using it as a weapon here. So, it’s unfair,” she complained.

Critics were not too sympathetic to her and her client’s complaint, with many arguing that the only ones who have a right to gripe about unfairness are Thompson’s family.

As previously reported, the federal charges were filed against Mangione after pressure from the healthcare insurance industry.

“Sources [said] that the federal charges came amid pressure from health insurance industry leaders to make an example out of Mangione, though it was unclear which specific entities petitioned the DOJ,” the Post reported in December of 2024.

“How the feds with the Southern District of New York made their decision to charge and haul Mangione to court … remained unclear, although one source [said] that it came from the top of the DOJ in Washington, DC,” the Post’s reporting continued.

And just like now, Mangione’s attorneys were also whining after this decision.

“Luigi Mangione’s defense attorney has expressed amazement that her client, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will be facing both federal and state murder charges,” according to Newsweek.

“Karen Friedman Agnifilo also suggested that there may be collusion between state and federal prosecutors and that she will be seeking extra disclosure in the case. She told the court that in over 30 years working in criminal law in New York, she had never seen a case handled in this way,” Newsweek’s reporting continued.

“I would like to follow up on what the government just said and seek clarity on exactly what it is that is happening, because this is a highly unusual situation we find ourselves in,”  Afnifilo kvetched.

“Yesterday there was a press conference held by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that was announcing these murder in furtherance of terrorism charges, and there was absolutely no mention that Mr. Mangione was going to be charged federally,” she added.
