AOC pursues costly egg-freezing journey while still owing thousands in student debt

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is going viral for her egg-freezing journey, but some people have questions.

Namely, what ever happened to her student loan debt? Well, according to financial disclosures from the House, she has yet to make any significant progress on paying it off, despite making around $174k annually for nearly a decade.

“The Bronx and Queens Democrat has owed between $15,001 and $50,000 in federal student loan debt since her election to the House in 2018. That’s the same amount she owes now, according to her August disclosure, where lawmakers report ranges for debt and income,” the New York Post reports. “The ‘Tax the Rich!’ pol reported less than $81,000 in total assets.”

This seems strange in the context of saving up enough money to undergo costly medical treatments necessary to freeze your eggs. The process can cost anywhere from $10k to $20k per cycle.

She published an Instagram video on the decision, which has come under scrutiny from those who believe this means she could be gearing up to take a shot at the White House.

“Usually, I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs, and I want to share that with anyone who is — and I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that, you know, I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, I feel, and sometimes it can feel very daunting,” the congresswoman said.

“I want you all to see that, because women can do anything. And I think it’s badass that I’m gonna be, you know, giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing,” she continued.
