Artists offered 10k in grants to paint murals of Iryna Zarutska in big US cities

The tragic and infuriating murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska has inspired one CEO to memorialize her memory in cities across the United States.

Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe took to X to announce that he is offering half a million dollars to artists willing to paint murals of Zarutska in their cities. Those interested in putting up their own money to make this vision a reality are also welcome to do so, he says in his message.

“I am offering $500k in $10k grants to paint murals of the face of Iryna Zarutska in prominent US city locations,” he wrote. “Please contact [email protected] for more details. Please also share this message.”

“If you would like to contribute to this fund, please contact Katie also,” he added.

X owner and billionaire Elon Musk replied to the post, pledging a million dollars to the project:

Zarutska was just 23 years old when her life was ended by a knife-wielding man in Charlotte, North Carolina. She had fled the fighting in Ukraine and was living in the United States as a refugee when she boarded the South End light rail train in late August. Sitting behind her was Decarlos Brown Jr., who would eventually stand up and allegedly murder her by stabbing her multiple times before walking off.

Her death has sparked a larger conversation about mental health, justice system failures, and safety on public transportation, but it has also generated concern among those who believe that her memory will be forgotten as soon as the news cycle changes.

Thanks to people like McCabe, it doesn’t seem like that will be happening any time soon:
