The tragic and infuriating murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska has inspired one CEO to memorialize her memory in cities across the United States.
Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe took to X to announce that he is offering half a million dollars to artists willing to paint murals of Zarutska in their cities. Those interested in putting up their own money to make this vision a reality are also welcome to do so, he says in his message.

Zarutska was just 23 years old when her life was ended by a knife-wielding man in Charlotte, North Carolina. She had fled the fighting in Ukraine and was living in the United States as a refugee when she boarded the South End light rail train in late August. Sitting behind her was Decarlos Brown Jr., who would eventually stand up and allegedly murder her by stabbing her multiple times before walking off.
Her death has sparked a larger conversation about mental health, justice system failures, and safety on public transportation, but it has also generated concern among those who believe that her memory will be forgotten as soon as the news cycle changes.
Thanks to people like McCabe, it doesn’t seem like that will be happening any time soon:
Very generous and a great idea. Never forget Iryna.

Thank you for doing this. I want to stage a mass vigil in all 50 states since the media hid her death from us, and her funeral already happened. I just dont know how to go about it. But I want to do SOMETHING.

Inspiring the true meaning of art, like the ancient sculptures that live throughout time, they remind us of those we’ve lost, but they will be with us forever in art.
