Disbelief at the president’s clemency for the “worst killers” found the once and future commander-in-chief vowing a path forward “As soon as I am inaugurated…”
Escalating frustration from the American people in the final days of his administration, lame-duck President Joe Biden went beyond the nepotistic blanket pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, and the modern-day record of nearly 1,500 commutations to save nearly the entire rogues’ gallery of federal death row inmates from their scheduled demises.
As loved ones of the victims began to speak out and the public bristled at Biden’s clemency, President-elect Donald Trump decried the move from his placeholder with a promise to the American people.
“Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country. When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this,” Trump wrote Tuesday morning on Truth Social. “Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening!”
Following his reaction by sharing a screenshot of a report from the New York Post on some of the offenses committed by the death row convicts who would now be facing life in prison instead, the GOP leader went on to state, “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters. We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!”
As was reported, Heather Turner, the daughter of 59-year-old Donna Major who had been killed in 2017 along with 36-year-old Katie Skeen by Brandon Council, joined “Fox & Friends” Tuesday and said, “I was angry. I’m still angry. I am upset that this is even happening. That one man can make this decision without even talking to the victims, without any regard for what we have been through, what we are going through.”
“I’m completely hurt, frustrated, and angry,” she added as Major’s widower Danny Major asserted of the president, “Joe Biden certainly has no convictions. He’s a senile old man. He couldn’t tie his shoes I wouldn’t think if you could see him in person. It’s absolutely disgusting.”
Others who’d been saved by Biden, who maintained a moratorium on most federal executions throughout his administration, included a man who’d kidnapped and murdered a 12-year-old girl, one who’d murdered an Atlanta prison guard with a hammer, and one who’d sexually assaulted and stabbed two girls to death only to strangle a naval officer to death four years later.
“These are among the worst killers in the world and this abhorrent decision by Joe Biden is a slap in the face to the victims, their families, and their loved ones,” White House communications director designee Steven Cheung said in a statement. “President Trump stands for the rule of law, which will return when he is back in the White House after he was elected with a massive mandate from the American people.”
Throughout his campaign, Trump signaled his favor for expanding the death penalty, including for child rapists and possibly even drug traffickers.
