The most famous couple in politics, Barack and Michelle Obama, is the rumor mill’s latest object of interest after several unexplained absences.
Michelle Obama was a no-show at the funeral of late President Jimmy Carter and will be skipping the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump as well. While missing the inauguration could easily be chalked up to a distaste for the incoming president, why would she snub Carter?
According to CNN, the former first lady was in Hawaii on an extended vacation during the funeral and has given no explanation for opting out of the inauguration. The lack of explanation has given rise to a number of rumors, many of which focus on the marriage between Barack and Michelle.
Sources quoted by Page Six say that the subject “is getting a lot of DC peeps talking. The noise is getting louder. I’m told she was furious at seeing her husband yukking it up with Trump at the Carter funeral.”
A Beltway insider claims that Michelle Obama has effectively “checked out” of DC life following the family’s departure from the White House in 2017. Of course, this resulted in “certainly nonstop chatter that Michelle is fed up with the political circus, and pretending everything is OK with Barack all the time. What this will all lead to is to be revealed in time.”
Another source who has worked with the couple cautioned against viewing the couple as perfect.
“They don’t pretend that they have this Camelot relationship,” they said “They’re not trying to present that they’re this magical couple.”
A separate source revealed that she spends most of the time in Martha’s Vineyard as opposed to Washington, feeding the belief that she has had it with politics.
It likely doesn’t help that Michelle Obama has previously admitted that there were “ten years” where she “couldn’t stand” Barack. Political aspirations led to long hours as an Illinois senator, which in turn resulted in a less-than-happy wife at home raising two children.
“This isn’t what I signed up for, Barack. I feel like I’m doing it all by myself,” Michelle reportedly said at the time, according to Barack Obama’s own book “A Promised Land.”
Other sources are chalking her absence from the Trump inauguration as an intentional move that will “speak volumes.”
“She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up. She showed up reluctantly for the election. They were united, but she doesn’t have to unify around [Trump],” the source claimed. “Her absence speaks volumes.”
“Barack will be respectful of her views, just as she is of his,” they added.
Perhaps hoping to quell the rise of gossiping voices, Barack posted a gushing message to Instagram in honor of his wife’s birthday.

“Happy birthday to the love of my life, [Michelle Obama.] You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!” he wrote.
