Biden’s student loan handouts headed for a big backfire according to new poll

There’s little doubt that President Biden’s student loan handouts were a ploy to attract votes, but a new poll suggests that plan could backfire.

As Democratic officials, many of whom are burdened with tens of thousands of dollars of student loans, advocate for debt forgiveness, it’s the young Americans, a demographic likely to be most impacted, who are at the forefront of the president’s series of executive actions to cancel the debt.

But a new national poll shows that just 30% of Americans approve of Biden’s approach here.

The poll is from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, and shows that 4 in 10 U.S. adults disapprove of the president’s efforts, Fox News reported. The remaining 30% were either neutral or did not know enough to say.

More from Fox News:

Among those responsible for unpaid student loan debt, either for themselves or for a family member, just 36% of respondents approve of Biden’s handling of the handouts, while 34% disapprove.

The results reveal a deep divide over the issue of student debt relief even as Biden is pressing ahead with a new cancelation plan in a bid to energize young adults and Black and Hispanic Americans. Those groups are more likely to prioritize student loan relief but have flagging approval for the president, according to the AP.

The Supreme Court struck down Biden’s widespread student loan forgiveness plan, but the president responded by issuing executive orders targeting specific categories of borrowers while boasting that the high court could not stop him.

Overall, his taxpayer-funded handouts have erased student debt for about 4 million people, according to the Associated Press.

More in Biden’s favor, the poll showed that younger adults are more likely to prioritize government action on student debt — about half under 45 say it is extremely or very important.

The poll was conducted May 16-21, with 1,309 adults surveyed. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
