Bikers plan bridge takeover, end up losing their rides

A San Francisco sting put the kibosh on a Bay Area pedal posse as an entry onto the freeway proved the off-ramp of their attempted bridge takeover.

In recent years, soft-on-crime policies have led to regular displays of lawlessness in the form of sideshows, street takeovers and gangs of roving delinquents on bicycles weaving in and out of traffic, playing chicken with cars and pedestrians alike. Over the weekend, one such gathering found out the San Francisco Police Department was opting out of being lax on “risky behavior” as a joint operation with the California Highway Patrol set a trap to detain nearly a hundred bicyclists.

“TAKEOVER SHUTDOWN: On Mar 28, SFPD and @CHP_GoldenGate shut down a planned Bay Bridge takeover involving a large bicyclist group. All individuals were detained without incident. 85 citations issued. 85 bikes stored. Teamwork at its best,” detailed the police in a post that included video of the gang in the streets before an attempt to gain access to the bridge, found the riders being separated from their bikes.

“What we saw yesterday was not harmless fun. This is no place for games or risky behavior,” said CHP San Francisco Area Captain Tim McCollister in a statement. “We will continue to enforce the law and hold individuals accountable.”

Speaking with Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for the highway patrol explained, “The group was observed riding through the city. Similar incidents in the past have progressed to the group entering the bridge. We worked with SFPD to stage units nearby and continue to monitor.”

“Through ongoing communications and a lot of moving parts, the theory was proven correct and the group was intercepted before gaining access,” added the spokesperson who detailed that the bikes would be checked against a stolen property database, though it was suspected that the check would prove fruitless, “… there aren’t typically stolen bikes, as participants take a lot of personal pride in their rides.”

In the press release, CHP indicated, “Throughout the incident, riders were seen directly at moving vehicles, swerving in and out of traffic, and coming dangerously close to pedestrians traveling on city streets. These actions endanger not only the general public but also the individuals participating in this type of careless and dangerous behavior, which cannot be tolerated.”

Saturday’s activity was only the latest such example as previous reports had highlighted swarms of bicyclists on major roadways in Boston, Tampa and elsewhere.

While many applauded law enforcement for cracking down on the gang, which included at least one nine-year-old participant, others couldn’t help but believe that the glimpse of law and order in San Francisco had something to do with 2026 being a pivotal election year, where voters will be looking to see if their concerns are being addressed or ignored.
