Bill Maher goes after Sotomayor for botching facts: ‘That’s really ignorant for a Supreme Court justice’

Liberal comedian Bill Maher joined celebrated liberal commentator Bari Weiss this Friday in laying waste to the Democrat Party’s sanctimonious, misinformation-laden COVID echo chamber.

They started their critique by first pointing to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s “ignorant remarks” during the widely publicized hearing earlier this month on the president’s vaccine mandate.

“The Supreme Court just ruled on [the vaccine mandate], and when we found out what some of the justices said … it showed that they were just like every other liberal or conservative; they all listened to their own media zones,” Maher said, kicking off the discussion.

“They were listening to NPR all the time,” Weiss quipped.

Continuing where he’d left off, Maher added, “Sotomayor said we have over 100,000 children in serious condition and many on ventilators. At the time, there were fewer than 5,000. She also said it was a blood-borne virus. I mean, that’s really ignorant for a Supreme Court justice.”

Making matters worse, he continued, is that Sotomayor is by no means alone in her ignorance.

“So don’t be ‘we’re the people who believe in science,’ but you don’t have the facts. I read this before: like 41 percent of Democrats last year thought that over 50 percent of people who got COVID were hospitalized. It was less than one percent,” he said.

FYI, he’s, in fact, cited this poll several times:

Weiss then cut in to highlight the culprit for all this ignorance.

“I’m sorry, but if you’re watching cable news all day, that’s what you’re going to think. There is misinformation, and not just on podcasts and the internet. It’s also on cable news,” she said.

Weiss mentioned podcasts because the establishment left (of which she is not a part) has begun gunning for them next:

“I think the biggest thing to me about the Democrats is … the Democrats are supposed to be the party of the little guy. But you know what? The Democrats are now comfortable with or seemingly comfortable with a two-tiered system in which the haves get to go into a restaurant, laugh with their friends for hours and the people serving them are masked and wearing gloves,” Weiss continued.

“Or they get to walk, as AOC did, at the Met Gala, while in the background the staff looked like they were in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ I mean, this is a look that is unbelievably detrimental.”

Maher was in complete concurrence.

“And the people with the consulting jobs or whatever … they get to stay at home and order the food out and do sh*t by Zoom. It’s the working-class people who are breathing their sh**ty, stale air all day,” he said.

“That looks like it’s going to create a class resentment. I mean, it looks like the liberals are always suggesting sacrifices they themselves don’t have to take part in,” he added.

Indeed, throughout the pandemic, Democrat after Democrat after Democrat has been caught violating COVID restrictions, to the point that even CNN, a staunch Democrat Party ally, has called them out:

The panel, which included Democrat Rep. Ritchie Torres, then pivoted the discussion to the upcoming midterm elections.

However, during another segment on the hour-long episode, Maher pointed out how the rest of the world is slowly moving on from COVID.

“Let’s talk about the bit of a reset I think going on in the world with COVID. I see in Europe, a lot of the leaders are now saying we have to live with it. Boris Johnson said we have to live with it, it’s not going away, treat it like the flu,” he said.

“Some of the things they were doing in the U.K., now they’re not doing anymore. They’re ending mandated face masks in school — that’s gone. Work from home advisories — nope. Mandatory passports to get into nightclubs and large events, legal requirement to self-isolate — no.”

He then added that he believes the United States ought to be moving in the same direction, prompting Torres to claim that the U.S. is already “gradually transitioning to normal.” That claim seemed highly dubious to Weiss.

“I’m done with COVID. I went so hard on COVID. … Here’s the thing, a lot about a lot of us did do [what we were supposed to], and then we were told you get the vaccine and you get back to normal. And we haven’t gotten back to normal and it’s ridiculous at this point,” she said.

“I know that so many of my liberal and ‘progressive’ friends are with me on this, and they do not want to say it out loud, because they are scared to be called anti-vax, or to be called science deniers, or to be, you know, smeared as a Trumper.”

“I’m sorry, but if you believe the science, you will look at the data … and you will find out that cloth masks do not do anything, you will realize that you can show your vaccine passport at a restaurant and still be asymptomatic in carrying Omicron and you will realize, most importantly, that this is going to be remembered by the younger generation as a catastrophic moral crime,” Weiss added.
