Bill Maher says Democrats need to do something about ‘The View’ after insane comments

Liberal comedian Bill Maher suggested on Friday that Democrats should rid themselves of “The View” and its wacky, far-left opinions.

He issued the suggestion while speaking on HBO’s “Real Time” about the left’s gradual return to sanity, as evidenced by a recent New York Times report recognizing the dangers of transgender procedures for kids.

Maher said the Times’ piece showed that Democrats had taken a step “back to sanity.” But, he continued, Democrats should take another step and “do something about ‘The View.'”

His remarks came a couple of days after “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg compared the plight of black Americans to the plight of the genuinely oppressed Iranian people.

Responding to Maher’s remarks, his guest, Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt, disputed Goldberg’s narrative.

“My district in the great state of Texas is actually a white majority district that President Trump would have won by 25 points,” he said. “As I said, I’m a direct descendant of a slave, my great-great-grandfather, who was born on Rosedown Plantation. I am literally being judged not by the color of my skin but by the content of my character.”

“That’s the progress because — like a lot of white people had to vote for me — a lot. So I don’t ever want to hear Whoopi Goldberg’s conversation about how it’s worse to be black in America right now,” he added.

After the show, independent journalist Tara Palmeri argued to Fox News that Democrats trying to distance themselves from “The View” would be a disservice because stopping by the show to promote books or drum up support before an election is pivotal.

“Whoopi and Joy and the others, they feel like they can say whatever they want, which they can — it’s a free country, but it doesn’t reflect the conversation at any dinner table unless you’re in Brooklyn or Seattle,” Palmeri said.

“It reflects a very rarefied group of people who live in New York City, and they have a conversation that is led primarily by very liberal voices, and they can make comments that are kind of outlandish, but… on the right, you see that as well,” she continued.

“So what about what Whoopi thinks? You don’t have to agree with her. You can go on ‘The View’ and actually engage with her in a way that points out the unreasonability of her comment, or the shock value of it, and if you actually win that debate, and you’re a Democrat, I think it shows you’re a more moderate voice,” she added.

Fair enough.

But also speaking with Fox News, Nicholas Fondacaro of the conservative news watchdog group the Media Research Center disagreed, making the case that Democrats would be wise to follow Maher’s advice.

“ABC has allowed ‘The View’ to craft a fantasy world for themselves where the wealthy celebrities are somehow oppressed and on the verge of becoming political prisoners,” he said.

“The show promotes a toxic victim mentality that leads them to think they’re treated worse in America than they would be in Iran, all while shouting it on a national TV show. Democrats would be best served by distancing themselves from the show, especially when they make comments like Sunny Hostin, who suggested that opposing wokeness is ‘ungodly,'” he added.

But he doesn’t realistically expect Democrats to take his advice.

“The fact that the show is so sycophantic in pushing leftist political dogma and on one of the major news networks in America, the show provides too good of an opportunity to promote themselves for Democrats to pass up,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Tim Young of the Heritage Foundation told Fox News that “The View” has become a de facto testing ground for leftist talking points.

“But if you look at how the demographics drastically shifted toward President Trump in the last election, you would think the left would wake up, cancel the show, and run their propaganda through much more reasonable voices,” he added. “The problem is, there aren’t more reasonable voices on the left at the moment.”

True.
