Brave family dog caught on camera chasing mountain lion away from California home

A remarkable video taken Friday in Morada, California, which is just north of Stockton, captured a family dog chasing a huge mountain lion in the backyard of a home.

Fortunately for the dog, the superior apex predator it was chasing didn’t decide to suddenly take a stand.

“I was having a Bible study in our rec room. My friend looked out and said, ‘Oh your dogs are playing’ and I said, ‘I only have one dog,’” the homeowner told KCRA.

After going outside to see what was going on, the homeowner said of the big cat, “It just, in one leap, was up in the tree so quickly.”

San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said efforts to trap the mountain lion have been unsuccessful.

“As a precaution, residents in the area are advised to bring animals inside, and stay inside themselves,” the sheriff’s office told local residents.

As for the dog’s chances had the fleeing cat turned on it, a video taken in December out of Sonoma County showed the likely outcome — in that attack, the dog miraculously survived after a mountain lion burst into a home and dragged it outside.

Rebecca Kracker told FOX2 KTVU that she heard her border collie, Sherman, yelping and growling and when she went to check on the pet she saw a mountain lion standing over him.

“She was bearing [sic] her teeth and hissing, and he had passed out from shock,” Kracker told the Fox affiliate. “I thought he was dead at that point.”
