It was inevitable that the Colorado Supreme Court’s unprecedented ruling to block former Republican frontrunner Donald J. Trump from the ballot would spawn copycat efforts in blue states and California is looking to be next.
On Wednesday, California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis sent a letter to Secretary of State Shirley Weber urging her to find a way to dump Trump from the ballot in time for next year’s election.
Citing the ruling by the four Colorado left-wing judges, Kounalakis wrote, “I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.”

“I am prompted by the Colorado Supreme Court’s recent ruling that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to appear on the state’s ballot as a Presidential Candidate due to his role in inciting an insurrection in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy,” she claimed.
“California must stand on the right side of history. California is obligated to determine if Trump is ineligible for the California ballot for the same reasons described in Anderson,” Kounalakis insisted. “The Colorado decision can be the basis for a similar decision here in our state. The constitution is clear: you must be 40 years old and not be an insurrectionist,” she wrote, proving her ignorance about the nation’s founding document by incorrectly overshooting the age requirement by five years.

“In my opinion, everything about Donald Trump has been enormously unfortunate, when you have a president who is constantly flouting rule of law, constantly saying that the rule of law does not apply to him,” Kounalakis told KCRA without providing any specific examples to back up her wild claim. “Well here’s a moment when the Colorado Supreme Court is saying yes it applies to you and it is in the U.S. Constitution that insurrectionists can not be on the ballot.”
“This is essentially the rule of law functioning as it is intended to,” the Democratic party apparatchik continued. “So whether it’s in Colorado, California, or any other state this is really something I think that every state needs to, needs to be asking seriously.”
Now that the Colorado court has delivered its anti-Democratic ruling, it has become clear why the term “insurrection” has been hammered repeatedly by Democrats, their Never Trump allies like Liz Cheney and the media, and Tucker Carlson summed it up in a short video that he posted to X on Wednesday.

“There will be the inevitable political punditry about a decision to remove Trump from the ballot. but this is not a matter of political gamesmanship. This is a dire matter that puts at stake the sanctity of our constitution and our democracy,” the lieutenant governor wrote in her letter.
“Time is of the essence as your announcement of the certified list of candidates for the March 5, 2024, primary election is coming up next week, on December 28, 2023,” Kounalakis urged Weber in her letter, putting the secretary of state under pressure to move quickly.
