Aiming for an eight-figure workaround concerning gender ideology cuts backed by President Donald Trump appeared to prove, “Sterilizing kids is a top priority for California Democrats.”
Making ends meet appeared to be of little concern to the zealots in Sacramento on Monday, as a joint budget hearing was held by the California Senate and Assembly budget subcommittees on health and human services. There, Democrat lawmakers demonized the White House over alleged attacks on the “trans community” while exploring covering a $26 million tab of medical services after the American taxpayer spigot had been cut off.
“Since the very beginning, the Trump administration has meticulously, inhumanely attacked the LGBTQ communities, specifically the trans community,” said state Sen. Caroline Menjivar (D). “We believe everyone deserves the right to be treated equally and fairly.”
Regarding the specific demands of activist groups, Sacramento Pride posted to social media in late February, “We’re calling on state leaders to invest $26M to protect transgender healthcare in California. Transgender youth deserve stability. Families deserve certainty.”
The group argued, “In a state budget of over $300 billion, our $26 million ask is a small investment to protect & stabilize access to care for transgender people & their families.”
The New York Post reported that, amid a lawsuit filed by California over the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) declaring genital mutilation and chemical castration procedures for minors unsafe, the state directed $15 million toward costs. Efforts to do more are laid out in the hearing’s agenda, including using a state initiative to reduce prescription drug costs, CalRX.
“The Legislature may also wish to consider whether existing state entities, like CalRX, could help secure access to gender affirming care drug products that could be at risk from federal threats,” detailed the agenda as the state braced for the loss of federal funding.
As California Democrats framed it, “It has been clear since January 2025 that the Trump Administration is engaging in a systematic effort to deny the basic dignity and legal rights of transgender Americans in nearly every way, but particularly regarding access to gender affirming care services.”
“While the California Department of Justice, in partnership with other states and allied entities, is defending transgender Californians from this institutionalized assault on their rights,” the Democrats claimed, shifting to demonizing those on the bench who didn’t align with judicial activism, “the current makeup of the federal judiciary suggests that hatred and bigotry may prevail. Given these realities, the Legislature may wish to consider whether there are additional legal protections needed in state law to protect access to gender affirming care for transgender Californians.”
Amid steps taken by the Trump administration, a rule has been proposed to prevent Medicare and Medicaid funds from being used to cover the damaging and typically irreversible procedures associated with gender ideology, as well as to restrict enrolled providers from offering such procedures.
When the rules were introduced, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy said, “So-called gender affirming care has inflicted lasting physical and psychological damage on vulnerable young people. This is not medicine. It is malpractice.”
Likewise, during the hearing, California Assemblyman Joe Patterson (R) said, “The realization that a lot of western society has abandoned transgender affirming care for children, California continues to go full steam ahead on it.”
Activists argued the contrary as the group Women Are Real told the Post, “When millions in taxpayer dollars and irreversible medical decisions for children are on the line, lawmakers have a duty to hear all the evidence, not just one side.”
Others took the side of the administration on social media, decrying leftists for their unceasing quest to impose gender ideology on children.
