Canadian school under fire for creating food-free zones on behalf of Muslim students fasting for Ramadan

A “woke” Canadian school is under fire for creating food-free zones on behalf of Muslim students observing Ramadan, which began on Feb. 17 and concludes on March 18.

The drama started when the Fairway School in Calgary sent an email to parents on Feb. 18, according to the Calgary Herald.

“The post highlighted that to support Muslim students who may be fasting during the day, the school’s cafeteria would be a designated ‘no food space’ for the first half of the lunch hour for students in grades 4 to 6,” the Herald notes.

“The lunch room would be a designated ‘no food space’ for students in grades 7 through 9 for the entire lunch hour. On inclement weather days, the school’s learning commons would be a ‘no food space’ for all students in grades 4 to 9,” according to the Canadian paper.

In the email, the school made sure to mention Ramadan by name.

“Ramadan is a month of reflection, prayer, generosity and community,” school administrators wrote. “We extend our warm wishes to all who are observing, and remain committed to ensuring our school is a supportive and respectful environment.”

The email sparked so much backlash that the Calgary Board of Education decided to address the situation in a statement published to Facebook. The statement began with the board celebrating its commitment to being “inclusive.”

“Every day, all CBE schools work together with students, parents and staff to create welcoming, caring, respectful and safe school communities where each and every student feels a sense of belonging,” it read. “While we recognize different beliefs, CBE does not teach or ascribe to any particular religion when delivering the program of studies.”

The statement continued with the board defending its special “accommodations” for Muslim students.

“During special cultural and religious observances, schools are able to make accommodations to support students, both in and out of classroom activities,” it read. “This could include accommodations when students are fasting during Ramadan. Depending on the number and size of the school population engaging in fasting, this is done in different ways. This may include designating distinct spaces as non-food areas.”

“The school in the social media post always has different grades eating in different spaces in the building. No changes have been made to these designated lunch areas. During Ramadan, alternative foodless spaces are available for fasting students so they are not around others who are eating. The school does not provide cafeteria food services,” it continued.

Comments were conveniently disabled by the board. This is a common censorship/silencing tactic employed by the “woke” left.

However, comments continue to flood the separate social media site X.

“This is not the school’s ‘supporting’ Muslim students,” one commenter wrote. “This is the school establishing in fact the domination of a public school as an instrument of the Muslim conquest of Canada. Period.”

“Instead of allowing muslim kids to stay in an empty classroom during lunch they punish the rest of the kids by making the only room designed for lunch ‘food free,'” another wrote. “Yeah. Totally sound logic here. I can’t with these ppl.”
