Cardinal Nichols rejects woke rewrite of Christmas classic: ‘More important than particular sensitivities’

The woke agenda may be striving to dismantle traditional values and beliefs but, as progressives have gone as far as to rewrite Christmas carols, the faithful have refused to remain silent on “the importance of ritual.”

Just over four hundred years ago at this time of year, Pilgrims fleeing religious persecution set foot in what would become Plymouth, Massachusetts. Now, as those same Christian beliefs are being defiled at home and abroad, one archbishop spoke up against those working toward inclusion.

Joining Times Radio, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, spoke out this week after All Saints with Holy Trinity Church in Loughborough, England included a performance of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” with rewritten lyrics to include “queer and questioning” along with a progressive feminist message.

“I think what Christmas does, and many other moments…it tells us the importance of ritual. And ritual helps us to step outside of our own little bubble, connect with something we have received, inherited and that we hope to pass on,” Nichols reacted.

“And I think those values are the continuation of musical repertoire, of the ability to sing together, of looking at the rituals that have been fashioned over centuries. And those are probably, for me,” he went on, “more important than particular sensitivities which come and go.”

The updated lyrics were posted by a trainee priest at the “inclusive church” to Twitter with the message, “Flipping love my church,” which led Sam Margrave, a member of the Church’s General Synod, to comment, “When they say we aren’t ordaining political activists. Show them this…Absolutely disgusted and act of worship to our Lord & Saviour is being used to push political ideology contrary to [Church of England] teaching.”

As pictured, the lyrics read:

“God rest you, queer and questioning,
your anxious hearts be still,
Believe that you are deeply known
and part of God’s good will
For all to live as one in peace;
the global dream fulfilled.”

-and-

“God rest you also, women,
who by men have been erased,
Through history ignored and scorned,
defiled and displaced;
Remember that your stories too,
are held within God’s grace.”

According to the Daily Mail, Rachael Brind-Surch, the trainee priest who posted the lyrics, responded to backlash and said, “My faith informs my politics and I will never be sad or mad or apologise for attending a church which challenges me to think about them more and the policies being legislated for in our name.”

Truly emphasizing how far the church has fallen to, as billionaire Elon Musk would say, “the woke mind virus,” the same week that churchgoers at All Saints with Holy Trinity were singing carols of “queer and questioning,” a woman was arrested outside an abortion clinic in England for silently praying.

Likewise, while the Church of England evidently took no action against the Loughborough church, the Catholic Church had defrocked outspoken pro-life priest Father Frank Pavone who charged that too many bishops were “Democrat loyalists.”
