Carville, Bill Kristol predict outcome of Biden debate: ‘I assume Trump won’t do it’

Veteran Democrat political strategist James Carville predicted that presumptive GOP nominee Donald J. Trump will back out of his first debate with President Joe Biden.

The first of two debates that the former president agreed to is set to take place later this month in Atlanta under conditions where he will be at a huge disadvantage with no live audience and CNN having tabbed two of the network’s most rabid Trump-haters in Jake Tapper and Dana Bash to be the moderators.

The “Ragin’ Cajun” cast doubt on the idea that the debate will actually take place during an interview with arch-neocon Bill Kristol this week and that Trump won’t show up as promised.

“I don’t think Trump will go to the debate. He doesn’t do anything that’s not in his perceived self-interest, and this is one of these things where he could hurt — Biden has a chance to help himself,” Carville said of the debate, which is slated to take place on June 27.

“I assume Trump won’t do it if he thinks it’s not in his interest,” said Kristol, saying he’s “struck” by how many people just “assume” that the former president will follow through.

Carville argued, “He said he was going to testify to trial … and you know what? When he didn’t testify, it didn’t cost him anything,” he said. “There was very little … even, ‘Well sir, you said…’ so he’ll say … he’s already said, ‘CNN can’t host. They’re not fair.’”

“He’s just going to brush it off and say, ‘It can’t be fair,’” he said, later adding that “He’s paid zero price for not testifying on his own behalf. None. And from that, he’s learned, ‘I can do what I want. I can back out of a debate. What are they going to do to me?’”

“It is my great honor to accept the CNN Debate against Crooked Joe Biden, the WORST PRESIDENT in the History of the United States and a true Threat to Democracy, on June 27th. Likewise, I accept the ABC News Debate against Crooked Joe on September 10th. Thank you, DJT!” Trump wrote on Truth Social last month, shortly after Biden – who had been ducking debating – suddenly had a change of heart.

Carville, whose bumper sticker slogan of “It’s the economy stupid” is credited with helping to put Bill Clinton into the White House in 1992, has been critical of Biden and Democrats as Trump continues to lead in the polls.

“Why are blacks not coming home to the Democrats? Because Democrat messaging is full of sh*t, that’s why,” he said during a recent podcast appearance.

He also recently expressed frustration that fewer people are believing the lies about Trump.

“It’s going the wrong way! It’s not working. Everything that we’re throwing is spaghetti at a wall and none of it is sticking, me included,” he said in a video posted to social media.

“And it’s hard when you’re starting your 80th year and you — you know, like anybody else, I have an opinion of myself, and the opinion I’ve come to is, I don’t matter,” he added, a bit of self-pity creeping into his voice.

“And, you know, we’ve got to, like, try to think of something different, because what we’re doing is really, really not working,” he said.
