CBS issues surprising mea culpa, vows things are changing now

Tony Dokoupil, the newest anchor of “CBS Evening News,” blew viewers away on Thursday with a stunning mea culpa.

CBS News, long a bastion of left-wing “news,” is now under the wing of Bari Weiss, a traditional liberal who’s vowed to re-earn the trust of the public. To that end, Dokoupil delivered a stunning mea culpa on Thursday in which he promised that things at CBS News will no longer be the same as before.

“A lot has changed since the first person sat in the ‘Evening News’ chair,” he began. “For me, the biggest difference is this: people don’t trust us like they used to. And it’s not just us. It’s all legacy media.”

Bingo!

Dokoupil continued by revealing how his own neighbors and friends have all said the same thing — that it’s time for a change.

“Sometimes they want to talk to me about our coverage of NAFTA or the Iraq War,” he explained. “Other times, it’s about Hillary Clinton’s emails or Russiagate. Or more recently, COVID lockdowns, Hunter Biden’s laptop or the president’s fitness for office.”

“The point is that on too many stories, the press missed the story. Because we’ve taken into account the perspective of advocates and not the average American. Or we put too much weight in the analysis of academics or elites, and not enough on you,” he added.

Left-wing academics and elites, to be more accurate. The media have spent years using testimony from clearly biased, hard-left “authorities” to automatically dismiss concerns from critics, including him.

“I know this because, at certain points, I have been you,” Dokoupil said. “I have felt that way, too. I have felt like what I was seeing and hearing on the news didn’t reflect what I was seeing and hearing in my own life. And that the most urgent questions simply weren’t being asked.”

“So here’s my promise to you as long as I sit in this chair: you come first. Not advertisers. Not politicians. Not corporate interests. And, yes, that does include the corporate owners of CBS. I report for you,” he added.

Dokoupil’s stunning speech prompted rage from elitist leftists who sincerely believe they’re smarter than everybody else:

However, the reaction from the right wasn’t necessarily better. While many right-wingers did give Dokoupil and CBS News credit, many others remained skeptical because of the network’s shady past.

“Nothing will happen at CBS,” conservative commentator Megyn Kelly predicted in a tweet. “Nothing.”

“Legacy media is dead and evening news has been totally irrelevant for a long time. CBS has not had evening viewers in any competitive way in more than a decade. It’s not reversible,” she added.

Others were even harsher toward the network.

“So now you’re going to talk to ‘the average American’…right after a decade of lecturing them, gaslighting them, and calling them extremists for noticing reality,” one sarcastic X user tweeted.

“Can’t wait for CBS to bravely report things like groceries being expensive, that crime actually exists, that borders matter, and parents notice what’s taught in schools. All of which Americans figured out years ago…without a focus group or a Monday night reboot. Bold. Courageous. Emmy-bait,” they added.
