CBS News invites Hegseth to sit at its table during upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner

The left is enraged because CBS News, now under the helm of sane person Bari Weiss, is being friendly with War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

How so? According to TheWrap, CBS News has invited Hegseth to sit at its table during the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and this evidently is a bad thing because Hegseth has been critical of the predominantly leftist press.

“The invitation pairs a cabinet secretary whose tenure includes restricting reporters’ access to the Pentagon and repeated insults over media coverage with a news organization transforming under Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss that critics say includes some congenial coverage of the Trump administration,” TheWrap whined.

Notice the shot the leftist paper took at Weiss. Never once in its history has TheWrap ever complained about a media network delivering “congenial coverage” of a Democrat administration.

Mediaite is also upset about the invitation.

“The ritual of the correspondents’ dinner depends on both sides taking their roles seriously,” the outlet complained. “The press has to believe it is independent enough to criticize power. The officials have to believe the press is doing a real job worth engaging with.”

“Hegseth doesn’t believe that. He has said so, at official government briefings, with considerable force. Seating him at a First Amendment dinner doesn’t soften that position. It just tells you where CBS stands,” their complaint continued.

Complaints have also been coming from inside the henhouse.

According to The Daily Beast, one CBS Staffer told Status (a newsletter) that the decision to invite Hegseth is “deeply disappointing.” Another staffer accused Weiss of trying to make an “access play” at the expense of the network’s so-called journalists.

Meanwhile, an executive from a rival network reportedly said the invitation is a “slap in the face to the journalists at CBS News to invite the man leading the fight to unilaterally shut down press freedoms in this country.”

“Nothing says celebrating press freedoms like the man who won’t even let photographers in the room for fear they’d miss his good side,” the executive kvetched.

FYI, Hegseth has never tried to “shut down press freedoms.” He did, however, institute common-sense rules last year that so-called journalists must abide by when inside the Pentagon.

These common-sense rules were, for example, that journalists cannot just walk anywhere in the Pentagon without an escort and a badge. They also say journalists can’t solicit or obtain intel that hasn’t been authorized for public disclosure.

Complaints are also rolling in about a separate bombshell announcement that President Donald Trump will himself be attending the WHCD for the first time since 2011.

HuffPost, a propaganda outlet for the left, is so mad about this that it announced it won’t be attending this year’s dinner.

“HuffPost refuses to celebrate journalism and laugh alongside an administration and president that regularly attacks the free press, weaponizes the FCC, and threatens to jail journalists,” the outlet reportedly told reporters.

Speaking with Page Six, a political source said that the networks that plan to intend are worried about how their top “talent” will fare.

“The networks are all having real discussions about having their talent front-and-center like sitting ducks,” the source said. “A couple of them are really thinking what that’s gonna be like. The main talent tends to be clustered toward the front, and you can see them pretty well. For someone [Trump] who doesn’t stay on a script or on a prompter, that’s sort of the unknown.”

“[Trump has] never had that kind of audience so close… he does his rallies, but the reporters are in the back, and they’re embeds, they’re not the top-tier talent. With the inauguration, you’re not playing to the press, the people — you’re there with former presidents and guests. I can’t think of an experience [Trump has] been in where he’ll have that amount of people together collectively who he thinks are his enemies,” the source added.
