An unidentified man was able to prevent a burglary in Chicago’s Lincoln Square area on Sunday using his concealed carry weapon.
The 40-year-old man says he was inside a closed, locked business shortly before midnight when he heard some noises coming from outside the back door. Upon investigating, he discovered the 18-year-old suspect attempting to gain entry to the building. He drew his firearm and shot at the teen, the bullet hitting him in the leg, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
The suspect was taken to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment and is currently in police custody with pending charges related to the attempted break-in.
This news comes amid the Democratic National Committee’s decision to hold its 2024 convention in Chicago. Other top location contenders included Atlanta and New York. The convention is planned for Aug. 19-22 and is expected to garner up to 50,000 visitors in addition to 5,000 and 7,000 delegates and alternates.
Chicago Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson had pitched the idea of holding the convention in his city despite the sky-high crime and a feeling of unease among the residents of the city. As American Wire noted in late January, some Chicago vendors were forced to pay local gangs for protection after outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot recommended they fight crime by not carrying cash. This turned out to be the worst kind of advice, as many of them reportedly only used cash for transactions, as is common in impoverished communities. Many have been traumatized by the wave of violence sweeping the city, suffering beatings and enduring robberies at gunpoint that strip them of their hard-earned money.
“We have been in Little Village working with those street vendors, understanding what the nature of the crime is, making sure that we’re doing things in concert with them to help them make sure that their money is secure, not use money, if at all possible, using other forms of transactions to take care of themselves,” Lightfoot said at the time, sparking a wave of outrage from those who saw the comments as uncaring and detached from the day-to-day reality of those living through the crime.
“Someday, historians will untangle one of the biggest mysteries that we’re living through, which is why would our leaders want to make our society more dangerous? Why do they want more rape and armed robbery and murder? Clearly, they do want that,” Fox News host Tucker Carlson said.
