Chicago mayor backtracks after outcry over removing George Washington statue

Former President Donald Trump was ridiculed by the media when he warned in 2017 that the left would soon tear down statues of George Washington, seen as the father of our country, and Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence.

Of course, we now know Trump was spot on, and the latest example of what can only be described as reverse discrimination was about to take place in Chicago until Mayor Brandon Johnson got cold feet and reversed his decision.

The black mayor had ordered that a statue of Washington be removed from a hallway outside his office at City Hall as part of what an aide called “updates to some areas,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The statue has been in place since being dedicated on July 4, 1984.

“We’re just freshening up the space. Making it a bit more current. There’s a lot of Chicago icons who would be deserving of statues as well. We should be considering that also — Ida B. Wells, DuSable, Harold Washington,” said the mayor’s Communications Director Ronnie Reese, naming several black candidates as possible replacements.

There was an immediate outcry on social media when the word got out:

After Mayor Johnson reversed course, Ald. Nick Sposato (38th) told the newspaper that the statue was staying put.

“It’s not coming down. It’s staying right where it is,” said Sposato, who is Johnson’s hand-picked chair of the City Council’s Committee on Cultural Affairs and Special Events

“When does this stop — the redoing everything and eliminating everything? I just don’t get it,” he added. “He’s George Washington. He risked everything. We are who we are because of this man.”

Unfortunately, in post-Obama America, Washington is also a white man.

Given the violent crime in Chicago, it’s a bit surprising that the mayor has time to focus on removing statues and updating City Hall. Then again, voters get what they deserve when electing people into office.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on the social media platform X:
