CNN’s Chris Cillizza rips James Clyburn for comparing GOP to Nazi Germany. ‘Rule No. 1…. Just don’t’

After a top Democrat ramped up the rhetoric by breaking “Rule No.1 of politics” in making a Nazi comparison, a CNN editor and political commentator’s attempt to chastise the behavior resulted in his taking the brunt of Twitter’s ire.

Editor-at-large and host of the podcast “Downside Up” Chris Cillizza penned a reaction to House Majority Whip James Clyburn’s (D-SC) doom-saying week of comments about what may be should the Republicans take control of Congress Tuesday as expected.

Specifically, he focused on the congressman’s interview with Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday” where Clyburn said, “The facts are very clear. I’ve studied history all of my life. I taught history. And I’m telling you, what I see here are parallels to what the history was in this world back in the 1930s in Germany.”

“Rule No. 1 of politics goes like this,” Cillizza wrote, “Don’t compare anything to Nazi Germany. Just don’t.”

Continuing, the commentator said, “it’s worth noting here that comparing anything to the Nazi regime, which led to the systematic murder of more than 6 million Jews, is a mistake. It just is. There is nothing in our current moment that suggests we are anywhere close to that.”

As previously covered, Clyburn didn’t seem to agree as he was repeating the same sentiment that he had conveyed to Fox News Digital on Thursday where he had said, “This country is on track to repeat what happened in Germany when it was the greatest democracy going, elected a chancellor who then co-opted the media,” before adding, “This past president (former President Donald Trump) called the press the enemy of the people. That is a bunch of crap. And we know it. And that’s what’s going on in this country.”

Cillizza offered a caveat that his analysis didn’t mean “that democracy is not under real threat. It is,” he claimed. “There are people who deny that the 2020 election was free and fair running for top positions in states from Arizona to Michigan to Pennsylvania. Not all of them will win. But some likely will. And it’s hard to imagine that the same people who denied the fairness of the 2020 election, without any proof, might not do the same if the 2024 election doesn’t go their way.”

His promotion of the Democratic narrative wasn’t enough to placate the social media mob which evidently held views as hyperbolic as Clyburn.

Of course, nowhere did Cillizza recommend ignoring history or perceived “threats to democracy.” In fact, he said the exact opposite as he concluded, “We absolutely should be vigilant about the potential rise of authoritarian politicians who would wipe out things like the rule of law to further their own political ambitions. But let’s stop making the Nazi Germany comparison. For all our sakes.”

But it appeared as though his lack of assigning that danger to the Republican Party writ large was damning, something cooler minds picked up on.
