Co-hosts squash Whoopi Goldberg’s argument that she already shows ID to vote

A claim about voter ID proved a bridge too far even for co-hosts of “The View” as Whoopi Goldberg was hit with a real-time fact check.

Confronted with the reality that the vast majority of Americans, on both sides of the aisle, are in favor of requiring ID to vote, ABC’s daily coffee klatch had to find alternative ways to kvetch over the proposed SAVE America Act. In the midst of obfuscating concerns about mail-in voting and downplaying proven fraud, Goldberg faced a prompt correction over her claim that she already has to show ID to vote.

Moments after raving about President Donald Trump encouraging Senators to skip the upcoming recess centered around Easter and to pass the SAVE America Act “for Jesus,” the “Sister Act” star attempted to dismiss the entire premise of the legislation as she asserted, “I’m sorry. You have to present your ID when you go to vote. I always have to give them my driver’s license so they can make sure that it’s me.”

While Joy Behar backed Goldberg up with a yeah, the claim hadn’t even been finished before fellow co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines splashed cold water on it.

“You don’t have to do that in New York,” said the former as the latter added, “I didn’t have to do that.”

“You don’t?” expressed Behar with surprise as Goldberg carried on as though the foundation of her premise hadn’t been kicked out from under her, “They have all this information in the voter registration. All the information is there.”

Shifting to fearmongering, Hostin, who had peppered in arguments about gerrymandering, contended, “Well, this administration is suing the states so they get that information, and a lot of that is very personal information.”

“Well, you know what, a lot of information that we have given away ourselves is very personal information which has allowed them to go and get information you probably shouldn’t give away,” agreed Goldberg before adding, “But my point is, we have all the things in place. What is it, what is this about? I don’t want to have to go get my stuff.”

Worth noting, the Federal Communications Commission is currently investigating “The View” over possible violations of equal time requirements after the program hosted Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) without granting the same airtime to then-Senate primary opponent U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D).

In response, parent company Disney was attempting to count “The View,” where the co-hosts are known for being forced to issue on-air legal corrections to claims they’ve made, as a “bona fide news program.”

“When you look at the lineup of guests that have typically been on ‘The View,’ I think it’s an uphill climb for Disney to make the case that they’re just a straight news program,” FCC Chairman Brendan Carr told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo.
