‘Code Red’: Newsom sows seeds of panic over ‘fair and free’ upcoming elections

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been fearmongering over the legitimacy of the yet-faraway 2028 presidential election.

To hear him tell it, President Donald Trump is scheming to pull off some Machiavellian scheme to remain in power forever.

“I really am scared to death about what’s going on in this country,” he told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl in a recent interview. “I really believe it is Code Red. It’s a five-alarm fire. It’s breaking every hour of every day.”

“We won’t have a country. We won’t have an election that’s fair and free if we don’t stand up,” he added.

He later in the interview predicted that the 2028 presidential will be as corrupt as an election in Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has reigned without any serious challenge for years.

“There will not be a fair and free election — it’ll be a Putin election,” Newsom alleged. “That’s what Trump wants.”

During a separate appearance on “The Late Show” last month, Newsom repeated his fears about the 2028 election while trotting out the conspiracy theory that Trump is trying to rig the 2026 midterm elections.

He said he was “raising awareness around how Donald Trump is trying to rig the midterm elections and how I fear that we will not have an election in 2028.”

Critics responded harshly to Newsom’s latest remarks to Karl, especially the statement about a “five-alarm fire.”

“Here’s a tip, Slick. You of all people would be wise not to use fire metaphors in your bullshit rambling,” conservative actor James Woods tweeted.

“The last ‘five alarm fire’ in California destroyed 16,000 homes and killed 29 people. Thanks solely to you, the commie mayor you support, and your idiot policies. Pipe down,” he added.

His tweet referenced the deadly Palisades Fire that Newsom’s administration failed to contain and handle properly.

Later in the ABC News interview, Newsom trashed the Trump administration.

“All the pardoning, all the, this, this great grift — the biggest, most corrupt administration in history,” he said. “Not just the $400 million plane, but the billion dollars of your tax money, as we’re cutting food stamps to pay for the damn plane so he can take that toy home with his foundation when he’s 93 or whatever he’s done with his fourth or fifth term.”

“I’m deeply concerned about it. And guys like [former Trump adviser Steve] Bannon, they’re not screwing around. They’re not screwing around. I’m afraid we’re going to lose our country. And where the hell is everybody? Why aren’t we standing up to principle?” he continued.

“I’m disgusted what’s happened in this country. I’m disgusted by the supine Congress. I’m disgusted by how the private sector is conducting themselves. I’m disgusted by universities selling their soul and law firms. I’m disgusted that people are not more outraged. Forgive me,” he concluded.
