A coffee chain’s provocative mural featuring a figure that appears to have undergone a double mastectomy has sparked outrage from people who say that it promotes the sexual mutilation of young girls in what has become a public relations nightmare.
The mural, which was displayed on one of UK-based Costa Coffee’s vans, shows a graphic of a bare-chested transgender male hoisting a cup and displaying scars from a breast removal procedure. It has led to calls to boycott the chain over its in-your-face political message, one that could have seriously adverse consequences given the potential to alienate customers.

“It’s almost unbelievable that Costa would do something so crass and irresponsible as to use this image,” Tanya Carter, spokesperson for child safeguarding campaign group Safe Schools Alliance said, according to the Daily Mail. “‘The executives clearly have no idea what message this conveys, that irreversible surgery on healthy female breasts is to be applauded. Is this really any way to sell coffee?’
Twitter/X users served up their takes on the cultural controversy that Costa Coffee has brewed up.
“You are promoting the mutilation of healthy young girls,” wrote X user Laurence Fox. “I hope you are boycotted out of existence.”
Dear @CostaCoffee
You are promoting the mutilation of healthy young girls.
I hope you are boycotted out of existence.#BoycottCostaCoffee pic.twitter.com/cphbdAkbZ3

Ugh. That is absolutely HORRIBLE @CostaCoffee. Celebrating women who cut off their healthy breasts is just grotesque. I will never set foot in your coffee shops again. #BoycottCostaCoffee https://t.co/ZSAO1Gc5eN

Very disturbing sign of the times that a coffee company thinks promoting female mutilation will play well with their customer base and enhance their business.

Costa’s Bud Light moment…. hopefully

This just illustrates how businesses are jumping on “woke” bandwagons hoping to increase their “cred”
Totally blind to the actual circumstances these often incredibly vulnerable young people are facing – often grossly exacerbated by the very same irresponsible corporations! STOP!— Malcolm Hay (same on other platforms) RMS Bushey (@MalHay) July 31, 2023
Are these companies being compensated by governments to advertise these brutalities to make people think they’re the norm ?

Just imagine a company putting out an ad for a girl having her healthy breasts amputated for a social contagion.
Next? Stomach stapling for anorexia/bulimia?
— GoFreeSpeech (@GoFreeSpeech7) August 1, 2023
It is a disgrace.
Who wants to take their children there for a muffin and a juice and then has to explain why there are scars where the girls’ breasts used to be.
Shame on them.

Disappointing. I like their coffee, but no way I would purchase from them now ♀️
— Tamara (@TruthandSun) July 31, 2023
It never gets any less sickening seeing these kinds of graphics being pushed mainstream
— 【 . 】 (@Vox_Oculi) July 31, 2023
Time to boycott Costa.
— Jim Ferguson (@JimFergusonUK) August 1, 2023
That‘s a new low, even worse than the Budlight Mulvaney desaster.

“At Costa Coffee we celebrate the diversity of our customers, team members and partners. We want everyone that interacts with us to experience the inclusive environment that we create, to encourage people to feel welcomed, free and unashamedly proud to be themselves. The mural, in its entirety, showcases and celebrates inclusivity,” a Costa Coffee spokesperson said in a statement.
