Convicted sex offender spends $150k to stage mock wedding to 9-year-old at Disneyland

A convicted British sex offender spent €130,000 (over $151,000) to stage a mock wedding with a 9-year-old at Disneyland Paris last month.

Using a stolen Latvian ID and “fabricated documents,” the 39-year-old British man identified as Jaskarn “Jacky” Jhaj booked a June 21 wedding with Disneyland Paris, according to USA Today.

He then hired 100 or so people to participate in the staged wedding, including a 9-year-old girl.

“The young girl arrived in France two days earlier, was not harmed in any way, and was not forced to play the bride,” USA Today notes.

The man hired to play the 9-year-old bride’s father reportedly alerted Disney staff when he realized the bride was just a child. They, in turn, alerted the police.

The police arrived soon after and determined that the wedding was “a fictitious ceremony intended to be filmed privately,” according to a statement from French prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier reviewed by the New York Times.

Bladier added that, for the mock wedding, Jhaj was “professionally made-up to show a face totally different from his own.”

Jhaj has since been charged with fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. Prior to this incident, he was wanted in Britain for reportedly breaching court orders related to another child sex case.

As for his conviction, it stems from 2016, when Jhaj was sentenced to four years in prison for having engaged in sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls.

“[T]he Metropolitan Police said he had driven around schools in Hounslow, a neighborhood of West London, trying to pick up girls by claiming he was a Hollywood film producer and offering them alcohol,” according to the Times.

Critics aren’t pleased by the fact that Jhaj was able to get this far in his plot:

“This story is as bizarre as it is disturbing,” Family Education Trust Director Peter Williams told Vice magazine. “I’m appalled by the extent to which systems of safeguarding and the justice system have, up to now, failed to adequately detect and deal with Jacky Jhaj, and hope that now his history of abusive activities can be brought to an end.”

Anande Mare Cross, the unwitting casting director hired by Jhaj, is still struggling to comprehend what happened.

“The event was presented to me as a luxury-themed wedding rehearsal,” she told Vice. “I could never have imagined the hidden, sickening, predatory intent behind it. As a survivor of child abuse myself, this has shaken me deeply.”

“I am heartbroken that families were put in harm’s way, and I am angry that a known sex offender was allowed to orchestrate such a scenario, inside a public space, under institutional cover. What is even more disturbing is the silence of the French authorities and the total absence of rapid public accountability,” she added.

The extras themselves also expressed shock.

“Everyone was stunned,” one extra side. “No one expected this. Disneyland does things very well. They immediately canceled when they understood that the bride was a kid. We were sickened by that.”

“I saw a little girl dressed in white,” another extra said. “I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. At that moment, I was shocked. I realized when I saw the child. It was atrocious.”

Jhaj wasn’t the only one arrested.

“Authorities also arrested three others, including the 41-year-old mother of the child [bride], as well as a 55-year-old Latvian man and a 24-year-old Latvian woman who would have played the bride’s sister,” according to USA Today.
