Officers are preparing for what is being called a “security nightmare” following New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s crusade against Benjamin Netanyahu.
NYPD sources spoke to The New York Post about the impending visit from the Israeli prime minister following Mamdani’s very public attempt to follow through on a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest. Local law enforcement is “furious” about having to establish a “massive, presidential-level police shield” for the visit, and they are pointing the finger squarely at the mayor.
“Basically, he’s making what would be considered a Category 1 hurricane that we deal with every year into a Category 5 because of his words,” one source told the outlet.
“We have to protect hotels, we have to protect wherever [dignitaries] go out to eat, we have to protect everything,” they added. “Having the mayor say, ‘Go ahead and protest, and he should be arrested’ . . . is unfair to your own cops.”
This comes after Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers to “take to the streets” and “express themselves” during the visit.
“This is a city where, if anyone feels a level of frustration or opposition, protest is something that we will always respect. That New Yorkers can express themselves, whether they are in support or in opposition, no matter on whatever topic,” he said. “And I’ve always said that when we respect our Constitution, we also respect our First Amendment.”
NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry responded to this call to action by pointing out that it could put unnecessary strain on law enforcement who are already stretched thin in the city.
“The mayor’s activist posturing puts police officers on the street in a terrible position. Protests during the UN General Assembly are nothing new, but when the mayor of the city is actively calling for demonstrations, violent agitators will assume they have permission to cause as much havoc as possible,” Hendry predicted.
“Those same agitators know that the NYPD’s protest response is already hamstrung by the dangerous lawsuit settlement the city signed over the PBA’s opposition. The mayor’s heated rhetoric could be enough to push demonstrations over the edge into chaos.”
The law enforcement source who spoke to The Post pointed out that, with political violence at an all-time high, anything could happen during the September visit.
“What’s going to stop one of the protesters from becoming a vigilante and trying to hurt or God forbid kill him?” they said, pointing out that officers could get hurt trying to keep things under control.
