Costco’s well-known Kirkland brand collaborates with Nike and it looks like a big fail

Perhaps the most bizarre brand collaboration in recent memory has set the sneaker resale market on fire.

Costco’s well-known Kirkland Signature brand just dropped a collaboration with Nike. The Nike SB Dunk Low x Kirkland Signature Exclusive will only be available for purchase in certain locations, Nike told Fox Business. According to Women’s Wear Daily, New York, Oregon, California, and Washington are the lucky states where shoppers can pick up a pair for a whopping $134.99.

“Costco’s chat function has confirmed the sneaker is available at stores in New York City, San Francisco, Portland, Laguna Nigel and Los Feliz, Calif., Kirkland, Wash., and Aloha, Ore. Additional stores may get stock in the coming days,” the outlet reported on Saturday.

The shoes appear to be modeled after “Kirkland’s signature sweatshirts, which are known for featuring the retailer’s in-house branding in black, gray, and white selections,” Fox Business reported. “The sneakers, adorned with several Kirkland emblems, come in a gray colorway with an exterior that resembles sweatshirt material and an inner lining that mimics the pilled texture a sweater develops after repeated wear.” They even come with a removable tag that is designed to look like the signature Costco cards that are required for entry into the store.

Even the choice of pricing could have a special meaning, the outlet notes.

“While the sneaker retails for $134.99, Costco is known for embedding subtle meanings in its pricing. The “.99” in $134.99 typically denotes a regular-priced item, whereas the “.00″ in $135.00 could indicate that the product is low in stock.”

Exclusive stock also means that online sneaker resellers are having a field day, making huge money from people desperate to get their hands on the shoes.

“On the StockX platform alone, 660 pairs of the shoes were resold over the weekend, with the highest sale reaching $600,” Fox Business noted.
