A nativity scene that featured Mary and another woman instead of her husband Joseph with baby Jesus prompted one shocked Fox News host to warn about the left-leaning changes in the Catholic Church.
Fox News’s Rachel Campos-Duffy expressed her disbelief over the story out of Italy in which a congregation was stunned to see one priest’s display of a lesbian nativity scene during over the Christmas holiday.
Last week, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had effectively allowed Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples as long as this was not confused with formal marriage.
Then Father Vitaliano Della Sala set off a wave of criticism for his nativity scene featuring two mothers with baby Jesus.
“This year I see the light of Christmas also shining on these families affected by inhuman and anti-evangelical criticism and condemnation,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The priest at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, in Capocastello di Mercogliano, a hamlet in the province of Avellino about one hour’s drive east of Naples, has defended its depiction of the birth of Jesus,” Reuters reported.
“I wanted to show with this scene that families are no longer just the traditional ones,” Della Sala told Reuters. “In our parishes we see more and more children from the new types of families that exist and are part of our society, children of separated and divorced people, gay couples, single people, young mothers.”
Filling in as guest host on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Monday, Campos-Duffy reacted to the story out of Italy.
“Well, it’s not just our politicians and the media that are waging a war on the story of Christmas,” she began.
“It pains me to say that it’s also happening inside of the Catholic Church. Churchgoers in Italy were shocked to find a lesbian nativity scene inside of their parish this weekend,” she added as she conveyed the scene.
“A cardboard cutout of the Virgin Mary draped in pride colors. Now, the priest in that church says he put two mothers in the nativity scene because, you know, ‘there are so many ways of being a family.’ That’s a quote from him,” she continued, referring to Father Della Sala.
Campos-Duffy then posed an ominous question in light of the Pope’s latest break from church tradition.
“Now, could a lesbian Virgin Mary be coming to a church near you now that the pope has approved blessings for same-sex couples?” the Fox News host asked.
“If Pope Francis has failed to protect our sacred doctrines and traditions, at least one church – the Church of the Latter-day Saints – is bringing the true spirit of Christmas to all places including Times Square,” she added, referring to the spectacular display in New York City as an awed hush fell in the busy intersection.
