U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw went on a rant this week targeting so-called “election deniers” who question the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election.
He offered the criticism during a discussion on his podcast, “Hold These Truths,” with election reform advocate Nick Troiano, who previously ran for office as an independent in 2014.
The relevant part of the discussion began with Troiano asking Crenshaw if he was concerned about Republican “election deniers” being elected to office.
“The kinds of more extreme candidates that are running are willing to overturn free and fair elections now. A majority of Republican nominees for the US House this cycle, right, aren’t accepting the results of the 2020 election,” Troiano said.
“And, I mean, what does that mean when the next, you know, crop of Congress comes in next year and we’re faced with similar situations of close election results in the future. I mean, this is a, you know, real threat to our ability to keep the republic,” he added.
Crenshaw replied by accusing “election deniers” of being attention seekers willing to say and do anything to garner some recognition.
Listen:
“I have two ways of thinking about that particular issue. It’s more of a threat of people just willing to say anything to get attention. Because look, I mean the good news is none of these people will ever have any power to overturn elections, right? This was — it was always a lie. It was always a lie. The whole thing was always a lie. And it was a lie meant to rile people up,” the congressman said.
“I’ve talked about this ad nauseam, It really made me angry. Cause I’m like, the promises you’re making that you’re gonna challenge the Electoral College and overturn the election, there’s not even a process for you to do that. It doesn’t even exist. So I was like, ‘What the hell are we doing?’” he continued.
But it’s not true that elections can’t be turned over. They certainly can be if enough evidence is presented.
That said, it sounds as if he was speaking specifically about the days following the 2020 presidential election, when then-President Donald Trump sought unsuccessfully to overturn the results of said election. The effort ultimately failed. That being said, the effort was 100 percent legitimate up until the Jan. 6th riot.
Crenshaw continued by seemingly attacking those who’d encouraged the pre-Jan. 6th challenge efforts.
“People just need their last hurrah. Like, they just need to feel like we fought one last time. ‘Trust me, it’ll be fine.’ And I was like, ‘No, it won’t.’ That’s not what people believe and that’s not what you’re telling them. And maybe you’re smart enough to know that but like — so we have a lot of people in the political world that are just willing to say things they know aren’t true. It’s a huge manipulation,” he said.
“I tell my own voters all the time, don’t be easy to lie to. Because there are plenty of people who want to take advantage of how easy it’s to lie to you and how easy it is for you to believe them, if you want to believe them. People want to believe that if they ‘fight hard enough,’ something will happen. But it won’t. Not in this case,” he added.
“So on the one hand, I actually don’t think it’s the biggest threat to democracy as you do, simply because it can’t be done. But on the other hand, I think the bigger — the more generic threat is this extreme willingness to say the most extreme things just to grab people’s attention and then people’s willingness to believe some of it,” Crenshaw concluded.
The congressman’s been ranting about the 2020 election for a while now. Back in August of 2021, in fact, he was heckled when he started claiming during a fundraising event that former President Trump hadn’t lost the election because of voter fraud:
“Don’t kid yourself into believing that’s why we lost. It’s not,” Crenshaw said.
“You’re wrong!” the heckler shouted, adding that he has “plenty of proof” otherwise.
The congressman wasn’t convinced.
“Five different states? Hundreds of thousands of votes? You’re kidding yourself,” he said.
Throughout his career in office, Crenshaw’s been butting heads with other Republicans. Not only over the 2020 election but also over the war in Ukraine and also over defunding the FBI.
The congressman is a huge advocate for sending more and more money to the European nation, never mind the interests of the American people.
Likewise, he’s an opponent of defunding the FBI, despite the number of times the federal agency has been caught behaving badly.
