Cringeworthy Prince Harry performance sparks boos on Colbert show

A late-night television appearance by Prince Harry made for some awkward viewing moments as the Duke of Sussex attempted to mock President Donald Trump and American holiday movies.

Harry’s appearance on the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” began with his surprise entrance during the host’s monologue and continued with a series of scripted jokes and jabs.

Colbert had been mocking the various “problematic” Christmas-themed movies that seem to be centered on royalty when Harry walked out, eliciting cheers and a standing ovation from the audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

“Excuse me, Stephen?” he said as the host responded with a handshake, saying, “Folks, it’s Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales Sussex. What are you doing here?’

“Sorry, I genuinely thought this was the audition for The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in a Basket,” Harry said, joking with a mock movie title.

“You’re an actual prince, why would you want to be in one of those movies?” Colbert asked.

“Well, you Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?” Harry replied.

“Hold on, hold on, look, I wouldn’t say we’re obsessed with royalty,” Colbert shot back.

“Really? I heard you elected a king,” he said, in an obvious jab at President Trump.

“You’ve got a point,” Colbert agreed as the liberal audience ate it up.

Harry also made a reference to the $16 million settlement in the lawsuit Trump brought against CBS.

“So what’s a prince got to do to get into a Hallmark movie these days? I’ve got skills. I can ride a horse, I can fly a helicopter, I can ride a horse in a helicopter,” the prince continued. “I’ll record a self-tape, I’ll fly myself to an audition, settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House. All the things you people on TV do.”

“Hey, Harry, I didn’t do any of those things,” Colbert contended.

“Maybe that’s why you’re canceled,” the prince quipped.

Eventually, the scripted dialogue led to a skit complete with fake snow and a “Happy Christmas, y’all” from Harry.

Harry’s wife, Meghan, posted a clip on her Instagram account, but neither she nor Harry made any mention of her estranged father reportedly being in intensive care following emergency surgery, according to the Daily Mail.

While Colbert’s Trump-hating audience applauded the prince, the social media reactions were mixed, with many remarking on the “sad” state of the “rent-a-prince.”
