Dame Judi Dench says Harvey Weinstein ‘has done his time’

Dame Judi Dench offered an eyebrow-raising perspective on disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview with Radio Times, the 90-year-old film, television and theatre star spoke of the convicted sex offender and their previous friendship, reflecting that she thoughtWeinstein “has done his time.” Dench also reflected on her friendship with Kevin Spacey, saying she has been in contact with the actor, who was found not guilty of sexual assault in 2023.

“Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey were very good friends to her – the latter was a great comfort when her husband died, the former made her career in Hollywood,” Radio Times’ Ginny Dougary noted in the piece published Sunday.

“She was quick to condemn the predatory sexual behaviour of the producer when it first came out. I wonder how she feels now. Can she forgive both men? What sort of accommodation do you make when a friend has erred so egregiously? Is every good deed or accomplishment erased for ever? Can they be more than the worst thing they have ever done, even if it was persistent behaviour? ”  Dougary wondered before broaching the subject wth the legendary actress.

“Kevin has been exonerated and I hear from Kevin, we text,” the Oscar-winning British actress said in the interview.

“I saw a bit of film of Harvey walking with two sticks and you think, ‘Well…’ I knew Harvey and I knew him well and worked with him, and I had none of that experience – very fortunately for me,” Dench, who worked on several Weinstein films, said.

According to Deadline:

Weinstein, 73, is currently serving a 16-year sentence in Rikers Island jail after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles in 2023.

Weinstein was also convicted in New York in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison. In a retrial this year, he was found guilty on one count of committing a criminal sexual act on Miriam Haley, but was acquitted of a second charge of sexually assaulting Kaja Sokola. A mistrial was declared on a third allegation of rape.

“I imagine he’s done his time…” Dench told Radio Times.

“I don’t know, to me it’s personal – forgiveness. I just think…” she added, as the outlet noted, “her voice trails away and we leave it at that.”

Dench spoke out about the once-famed producer back in 2017 as allegations of sexual harassment and assault surfaced.

“Whilst there is no doubt that Harvey Weinstein has helped and championed my film career for the past 20 years, I was completely unaware of these offenses which are, of course, horrifying and I offer my sympathy to those who have suffered, and wholehearted support to those who have spoken out,” she said at the time.
