‘Deep State bootlicker’: Gaetz goes scorched earth on Trey Gowdy

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz (R) did not mince words in blasting Fox News host Trey Gowdy, who voiced his opposition to Gaetz serving as President-elect Donald J. Trump’s attorney general, describing the selection as “absurd.”

“Trey Gowdy is and has always been a Deep State bootlicker,” Getz posted on X, along with a May 2018 clip of Gowdy essentially running interference for the FBI at a time when Trump was actively accusing the bureau of spying on his campaign.

Gowdy was chairman of the House Oversight Committee at the time and had been briefed by the Justice Department and FBI when he suggested in an appearance on Fox News that there was no evidence that a “spy” had been planted on Trump’s 2016 campaign.

“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said in the clip shared by Gaetz.

As for Gaetz’s selection for attorney general, Gowdy said: “Do not use the justice system as a weapon. And the message for Republicans is, don’t do it on the other side, either, with this absurd AG pick that you just made.”

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from social media users who seem to be of a similar mindset as Gaetz when it comes to the other former Republican congressman:
