A group of Hispanic lawmakers in the state of Connecticut is banding together to ban the word “Latinx” from official government documents.
The term is popular among progressive circles as a gender-neutral way to refer to people of Latin descent, but many Latinos and Latinas refuse to recognize the term.
Rep. Geraldo Reyes Jr. is one of the five Hispanic Democrats who is backing legislation and is the chief sponsor of the bill, and he claims the word is not only not Spanish but is offensive to the state’s Puerto Rican population.
“I’m of Puerto Rican descent and I find it offensive,” he declared. “The Spanish language, which is centuries old, defaults to Latino for everybody. It’s all-inclusive. They didn’t need to create a word, it already exists.”
In 2021, the League of United Latin American Citizens announced that they would no longer be using the term “Latinx.”
Perhaps this group was inspired by the actions of the new Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. In early January, she issued an order to nix the woke term from her own state’s official documents, calling it “pejorative” and “ethnically insensitive.”
“Ethnically insensitive and pejorative language has no place in official government documents or government employee titles,” the order read. “The government has a responsibility to respect its citizens and use ethnically appropriate language, particularly when referring to ethnic minorities.”
“One can no more easily remove gender from Spanish and other romance languages than one can remove vowels and verbs from English. It is the policy of the Governor’s administration to prohibit the use of culturally insensitive words for official state government business,” it continued.
Social media appeared to be on board with the removal of the term in Connecticut:

Dems rush to create new terms to give poc’s their own “identities”, proceed to attack normal people who are not fast enough to adopt their made up terms, poc group rejects woke labeling, dems quickly denounce the labeling and seek to find those responsible. lol

Good. Not the most important issue, but still good.

I’m shocked that Dem’s are behind this. Also, Latinos reject this term. Stop trying to push that stupidity on us.
