Democrats are now in the “finding out” stage of the partial government shutdown that they created.
Leftist demands regarding the funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) behavior in American cities have resulted in a partial shutdown that is entering its second week. While the effects are not as far-reaching as the previous complete shutdown, changes to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) could impact all Americans, including Democrat lawmakers.
“Shutdowns have real-world consequences, not just for the men and women of DHS and their families who go without a paycheck, but it endangers our national security. The American people depend on this department every day, and we are making tough but necessary workforce and resource decisions to mitigate the damage inflicted by these politicians,” reads a statement from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
One of the programs that was debated was TSA PreCheck, which will remain operational until potential staffing issues cause a need to reevaluate, but security escorts for Congressmembers have been canceled for the time being.
“At this time, TSA PreCheck remains operational with no change for the traveling public. As staffing constraints arise, TSA will evaluate on a case-by-case basis and adjust operations accordingly,” Fox News Digital was told by a TSA spokesperson.
The shutdown could once again impact flights as TSA agents refuse to show up to work if they’re not getting paid, resulting in flights being delayed or shut down entirely.
“Nothing’s going to happen here until flights get shut down, right? When TSA workers stop showing up. When the Democrats, you know, can’t fly, then they’ll give in. I mean, they don’t care, because they’re being paid,” said Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, to Fox News Digital.
Fox News has more on the consequences of the partial shutdown:
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has halted Global Entry at airports and diverted agents to instead help process travelers.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also stopped all public assistance for ongoing disasters, paused non-emergency work, halted non-disaster-related activities and restricted personnel travel to activities “strictly necessary to respond to active disasters and life-safety emergencies,” according to the agency.
Democrats have been butting heads with Republicans in an attempt to force reforms on ICE and other related agencies that are carrying out immigration law enforcement actions in the United States. While the White House has been willing to consider some of the ideas being suggested, it has largely rejected demands for judicial warrants and unmasking requirements.
