Democrat Maine Senate candidate no longer apologizing for his ‘Nazi skull’ tattoo

Democrat Maine Senate candidate Grant Platner is no longer apologizing for his “Nazi skull” tattoo.

In October 2025, Politico reported that the aspiring lawmaker had made comments expressing regret about getting the tattoo, which many say resembles a “Totenkopf” that was present on Nazi uniforms, and reportedly planned to have it removed after social media spoke up on a video of him dancing shirtless.

“It was not until I started hearing from reporters and DC insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol,” said Platner in a statement to the outlet. “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that — and to insinuate that I did is disgusting. I am already planning to get this removed.”

He also clarified that he “got the tattoo while out drinking with fellow Marines in Croatia, choosing the skull and crossbones off a wall at the tattoo parlor,” and nobody ever mentioned its potential history as a hate symbol during physical exams while in the armed forces.

“In the nearly 20 years since, this hasn’t come up. I enlisted in the Army which involved a full physical that examines tattoos for hate symbols. I also passed a full background check to receive a security clearance to join the Ambassador to Afghanistan’s security detail,” he said.

But according to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Platner defended the tattoo as just a “skull-and-crossbones” that is “an eminently reasonable thing.” He also urged everyone to watch the movie “Come and See” which “prominently and repeatedly shows the similar ‘Totenkopf’ on Nazi uniforms” according to the outlet.

“The fact that the 1985 film is one of his favorites may undermine his claims that he didn’t know the association of the symbol with Nazis,” DM pointed out.
