Voting rights groups moved with lightning speed after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis officially signed the state’s own version of the SAVE Act into law, suing to overturn the common-sense election integrity measures.
In a preview of the legal resistance that will meet the SAVE America Act on the national level if Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) ever gets his act together, the groups that are represented by Democrat lawfare king Marc Elias immediately filed a lawsuit seeking to block HB 991, claiming it violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
For three election cycles in a row now, Florida has been the model for efficient, responsible, and transparent elections. Today, I signed the Florida SAVE Act to reinforce our commitment to election integrity and security. pic.twitter.com/GlebawqoI7

Governor DeSantis signed the bill into law during a ceremony at The Villages, the heavily Republican enclave in central Florida, touting the Sunshine State’s election integrity reforms that have helped to prevent the Democrat cheating that is prevalent in other areas across the country.
“Our constitution in the state of Florida says only American citizens are allowed to vote in our elections,” he said. “And so we need to make sure that that is the law.”
“Safeguarding the electoral process to improve oversight and prevent unlawful influence has been a top priority for my administration since my first days in office,” DeSantis said in a press release. “Today I signed the election integrity bill, also known as the Florida SAVE Act. This legislation strengthens the security, transparency, and reliability of Florida’s election system. In Florida, we will always stand up for election integrity.”
Before the governor even finished speaking, the scheming Elias was set to spring his nasty surprise.
“I am listening to Ron Desantis talk about elections as he is about to sign a new voter suppression law. He is every bit as unhinged as Trump. Amazingly unhinged. As soon as he stops rambling and signs this bill, Florida will be sued. Stand by….” the Democrats’ chief legal eagle wrote in a post to X.

Shortly thereafter, Elias announced that he was bringing in the courts with the party’s greatest asset being their deep bench of activists in robes.

The legal complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida against Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd and the election supervisors of each of Florida’s 67 counties.
According to the 54-page document, the Florida bill “is the latest in a wave of Florida legislation that purports to advance ‘election integrity’—this time, in the name of stopping the fictional threat of widespread noncitizen voting.”
“But far from safeguarding Florida elections from unlawful voters, HB 991’s new requirements will exclude citizens from the electoral process, violating Florida voters’ First and Fourteenth Amendment rights and undermining the integrity of Florida elections in the process,” the complaint reads.
“Since 2020, Florida has enacted more significant election integrity reforms than any other state in the country,” Byrd said in a statement. “The Florida SAVE Act upholds the Florida Constitution by ensuring only citizens can vote in Florida elections.”
And that’s exactly why Elias and the Democrats are going to fight like hell to block it.
