‘Did Nazi that coming’: Atlanta Falcons new logo stirs controversy

The NFL’s Atlanta Falcons rolled out a new logo on Wednesday and likely got an unexpected response from social media users who just may have a little too much time on their hands.

The logo features a black falcon set on a backdrop of red, white, black, and gold stripes. For some fans, the new image invoked comparisons to Nazi Germany — imagine their surprise when they discover that the primary owner and chairman of the Falcons is billionaire businessman and The Home Depot co-founder Arthur M. Blank, who is Jewish.

The falcon in the team’s logo apparently reminds some people of the German eagle perched on a swastika, which adorned the back cover of a French edition of Adolf Hitler’s book “Mein Kampf.”

Atlanta used the new logo as its online profile photo, but opted to change it to a photo of a red helmet with the new falcon on it, as seen here:

Perhaps, with Nazism and fascism being a common political attack these days, social media users have Hitler on the brain — though some opted to have a little fun with the trumped-up controversy.
