A doctor and mother of two was found dead inside the freezer of a Miami, Florida, Dollar Tree store.
The woman, identified as 32-year-old Helen Massiell Garay Sanchez, was discovered in the Little Havana location when the store opened at 8am on Sunday, according to the Miami Police Department’s statement to Fox News Digital.
“Female was located inside a walk-in freezer/cooler located in the store’s stockroom,” said Public Information Officer Michael Vega.
A CBS News report cited police scanners in making the claim that Sanchez was also discovered to be naked.
“Complainant found a naked female in the cooler of the store,” said a dispatcher, according to the report. “I’m also advised by the staff that they don’t recognize her as well.”
A GoFundMe page was set up to help Sanchez’s family return the anesthesiologist’s body to her home country of Nicaragua.
“In memory of Dr. Helen Garay, a dedicated physician and beloved mother, who tragically passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 32. Originally from Nicaragua, Dr. Garay dedicated her life to medicine, becoming a renowned anesthesiologist specializing in congenital heart disease whose work brought hope and healing to countless children and families. Her compassion, skill, and commitment to saving young lives defined both her career and her character. Beyond her profession, she was a loving mother to two children, who remain in Nicaragua and were the center of her world. Her strength, warmth, and unwavering love for her family will always be remembered,” reads the touching tribute.
“Dr. Helen Garay passed away following a tragic accident while abroad. Her family’s greatest wish is to bring her back to Nicaragua for a proper funeral and final resting place, surrounded by her loved ones. The family is currently raising funds to cover the costs of repatriation, transportation, and funeral services in Nicaragua,” it continues. As of this writing, over $12k has been raised for the doctor’s return.
The circumstances surrounding the mysterious death remain unclear, and police are investigating the incident as an “unclassified death” at this time.
The store was closed for initial investigation, but opened back up later on Sunday. Patrons of the store were shocked to hear that such a horrifying discovery was made so close to home.
“I got to be honest with you, I’m totally devastated,” said Margarita Puig, according to CBS News. “I can’t believe in the Dollar Tree you’d find a dead body.”
Hugo Morales expressed concern for how long it would take the victim’s family to be notified of her passing.
“I think it’s crazy,” he said. “I’ve never heard of something like that in my life.”
