Donald Trump has always been the elephant in the room that simply cannot be ignored, which made any effort to challenge him for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination a long shot. Throw in the Democratic Party persecution in the form of four separate indictments, essentially making the former president a martyr, and he appears to be invincible.
The one candidate many saw as a rival capable of going toe-to-toe with Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has had a rough go at it, taking heat from both Team MAGA and the liberal media that serves as the Biden campaign arm.
In fact, it seems that even the stellar leadership DeSantis has shown in responding to Hurricane Idalia has failed to register in the latest polling as Trump has just increased his lead while the governor continues to lose ground.
NBC News cited recent polling to declare Trump’s “ascent in the national polls since his first indictment last spring has been arguably the most important story in the Republican presidential race.”
Par for the course, the network also highlighted DeSantis’ decline as being just as relevant.
More from NBC News:
“According to the Wall Street Journal’s polling, Trump held a 24-point lead over DeSantis back in April, 48% to 24%. But now it’s a 46-point advantage for Trump, 59% to 13% (though the rest of the GOP field has changed during this time).
“Or take CNN’s polling, which had Trump ahead of DeSantis by 21 points nationally back in June, 47% to 26%. But Trump’s lead has now ballooned to 34 points, 52% to 18%.
“Or look at Fox News’ poll, which had DeSantis at 28% back in February, versus 43% for Trump. But Fox’s latest national poll — back in mid-August — had DeSantis at 16% (versus 53% for Trump).”
With nary a vote cast in the 2024 GOP primary, we are reminded of DeSantis’ falling polling percentages and how he is not competing with Trump but mired in a battle with the other GOP also-rans.
All forces, including the Biden gatekeepers in the media, seem to be rallying around Donald Trump as the inevitable party nominee.
The big question here is about when to trust polling. When results go against the favored narrative, we are reminded of how wrong pollsters are and how polls today are designed more to shape opinions not reflect them.
DeSantis supporters certainly see the results as “fake.”
How fake are the polls?
DeSantis gives a masterclass in leadership during Idalia, the entire media is praising him and his poll numbers go DOWN. Figure it out folks, the polls are FAKE. https://t.co/zSqnYOCYHO
